A Look At Internet Censorship Around The World

from the free-speech-isn't-free dept

Shocklee points us to some fantastic infographics about global internet censorship, including this first one highlighting levels of internet censorship around the globe. Frankly, it looks like in some of the areas where there's "no censorship," it might just be that there's not much internet usage. Also, I do wonder how accurate or up-to-date some of it is. For example, it says there's no internet censorship in Venezuela, but we were just discussing some content regulations there.

Then there's a Venn diagram that tries to highlight exactly what the censorship "is about." As this critique of the infographics suggests, it's not the greatest, since the specific points are somewhat subjective. There's also this infographic explaining how the censorship generally works, which is interesting, but different countries use different methods, so I'm not quite sure how informative just this graphic is alone. Either way, in combination, it suggests that there's a fair bit of internet censorship that goes on around the world.

Australia is red, unexpected.

Wow America is pretty much censorship free. Both continents are yellow. Its also suprising to note that the middle East, China and some of North Africa are the only heavily censored areas around the globe. I wonder how long they will be able to keep it up.

The UK's censorship, and I suspect most of the yellow countries, is pretty much centred on child pornography/abuse.

Not surprised at Australia, its been a long hard fight to keep the douches away from our internets.

I'm slightly impressed by the east African nations, some of those are notrious for supressing people's rights, yet they look as though it's one of the regions with the least internet censorship.

They also have less access to the internet, and haven't felt the effects of an open system yet, I'd imagine.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

That is true. But even so, I'm amazed that for the few that do have access it's not censored much when you think of how corrupt the governments can be in that part of the world.

corruption could probably play into freedom in some of those countries: a little money under the table and the government won't legislate against your kiddie porn/multimedia torrent/human trafficking/offshore banking/terrorism/whatever sites.
