Brussee on Killzone 3: ‘1080p not possible due to amount of things in place’

friday, 04 February 2011 15:00 Kev J.

having revealed that Killzone 3 is perhaps the most challenging videogame title the PlayStation 3 console has ever been tasked with running, Director of Production Arjan Brussee has stated that the game will be limited to a high-defintion frequency of 780p. Not exactly a disadvantage for the game however, as the reason for this limitation is simply becuase there is so much happening at any one time that the effect of the gameplay would be diminished were it to be pushed to 1080p.

there have been numerous reports this week concerning the use of PlayStation 3 hardware thanks to Sony Computer Entertianment Europe (SCEE) hosting a press event in London to showcase much of their early 2011 PlayStation 3 line-up. Both Killzone 3 and Evolution Studios’ MotorStorm Apoclaypse were cited as utlising  the ‘full power’ of the PlayStation 3 system, but then many titles have previously. In fact, such a suggestion is relatively meaningless without supporting evidence, which Brussee has now offered for Killzone 3.

By suggesting to Eurogamer that the game is not able to deliver the top-tier of technical accomplishment due to the scale of it’s design, Brussee has offered a solid foundation for the suggestion that the PlayStation 3 has been pushed as far as it will go. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on Killzone 3.

720p is pretty much standard for consoles so its not a big deal.

People still haven't learned that outdated current gen console gpus can barely make 720p games at semi stable 30 fps?

And yet the PS3 has been putting out 1080P games for some time. The issue with this game and 1080P is the amount of things going on at the same time coupled with the detail. Not to get into a pissing match here, but first party PS3 games are the best looking console games that provide a much higher level of detail than provided by other consoles. In playing KZ3 Beta it also seems that they wanted to speed the game up a bit due to complaints about KZ2. So to assist frame rate while maintaining the GQ of the first game, they needed to hold off on resolution size.

I'm not so sure about "barely", as there are quite a few games with stable framrates that handle 720p just fine. I do agree, however, that the tech is outdated, so things are starting to really strain what we have.

Awfull lot of games have noticable framedrops, texture pop-up or is rendered at sub 720p resolution.

And evon those who don't mostly run at 30 fps instead of optimal 60.

Despite this developers still have to explain why 1080p wasn't possible?

Damage control :)

Next gen, we'll see the full 1080p, hopefully.

The article is a case of 'no shit sherlock'. This gen can't handle 1920 x 1080p apart from technically basic and straight forward games such as Super Stardust. Developers are always pushing the tech and console tech stands still for about 5-10 years and one the things that gives way is the resolution. But I would love to see games such as KZ3 using say 8 x MSAA, 16 x AF and native Full HD 1080p @ 60fps. How amazing would that look.

Btw it's 720p not 780p.
