Forums - Sales Discussion - *Where Would Gaming Be If Wii Failed?*

@radiantshadow i agree with your driver's seat thing, but i think gamers who dont game on Wii are in a pretty good place. 360 gets great 3rd party support and the 3rd parties are doing much better with the PS3 and Sony 1st party is something to behold, if I may id say ive only ever seen the Wii owners complain, not flamebaiting but ive seen more "why this HD game not on Wii" thread than i have seen vice versa. Hell there starting to go for the PSP now!! (Soul Calibur, SplitSecond)

Sony still was developing things for the PS Eye and Kinect might have still been made. The Move was still in development, but it might have been in R&D longer into maybe the next console generation. We would probably be where we are now.

Nintendo would wonder why the fuck the casual thinggy work on the ds but not in the console market and we wouldn't be able to blame wii fit

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Well, by now, the industry would have collapsed and Sony and MS would be playing "Who Pulls the Plug on Video Games First?" in the home console market, with most notable third parties bankrupt.

Yeah because the gaming industry collapsed the last two gens without Nintendo in the drivers seat.

It has nothing to do with Nintendo being in the driver's seat. The last two generations did not have consoles as ridiculously overpowered and overpriced early on as the PS3 and 360 ($600 and $400 at a loss). If it weren't for Wii sitting on top of them, the HD consoles would've probably fought each other to death with price cuts and the like and third parties wouldn't have had quick, inexpensive games on the Wii to balance off huge HD development costs.

Thats the way it is every gen, theres no way in hell third parties would have any more costs then they did originally. You act like third parties were ONLY developing for the WII at first. But the 360 came out a year before it. And your price cut argument makes no sense. The WII IS the driving force for why the systems have been price cutting so much since it is the cheapest. Theres no way Sony would have had to drop the price of the ps3 by 300$ in three years to keep up with the 360 which has only been under it by 100-200$.

You kidding? Don't you see how terrible this generation is already? I'm not an analyst of any sort or anything remotely close to it, but something tells me that not every generation has its biggest players drowning in losses. Check that thread about Gaming Division results or just look at the front page. This generation isn't just bad, it's terrible, financially. Without Nintendo, the industry would have been losing so much money each year in the past few years, it wouldn't have been funny.

Also, obviously third parties didn't develop only for Wii - they barely developed for it at all - but, if they were to focus all their resources on the HD consoles, which I believe were not initially very profitable, they would've been in an even worse state.

And, honestly, PS3 and 360 were almost in a different market altogether from the Wii. If they'd been against each other and no one else, they probably would have focused more on draining from each other's sales, with the use of price cuts, moneyhatting even more exclusives and what not, rather than draining from the Wii's sales as they're trying to do with Move and Kinect.

By the way, I have almost no idea what I'm talking about and this is mostly just what idea I get from looking at stuff and guesswork so if I've said something completely wrong or baseless or stupid, please let me know.
