Forums - Sales Discussion - Will the PS3 and 360 gap grow or close in 2011?

I'll say the same thing Ive always said.... Move and Kinect wont play a big role in the sales of the system. Most of the people buying those things are owners of consoles already. It will come down to the games and that is where the PS3 excels this year.

Gap will grow closer and closer until christmas gets here. Then I really wouldn't know.

I wonder if amidst all these latest events there are still some who believe the ps3 can catch up this gen. I'd surely like to hear their reasoning. As for me, I believe it'll most likey stay the same

The strangest thing happened though. Anyone else use gamefaqs.com? Well, it's pretty much a U.S. gaming site and the ps3 was voted console of the year 2010. looking at the U.S. sales chart, I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Sales doesn't matter for this kind of awards, its about games and entertainment. If it was about sales DS and Wii would be the console of the year every year.

Ofcourse the PS3 will catch up, it is still priced at 299$/euros while the competition is 100$ cheaper had a 500 million dollar ad campaign. The gap was almost 9 million before PS3 Slim and pricecut. Its now at 4,2 million.

If even 360 Slim and Kinect( 500 million$ ad campaign) didn't do much, then what will? I heard the gap was 3,5 million in October 2010. It only grew 700K, kinda pathetic.

PS3 has dozens of exclusives this year, I don't think these will have such a big impact on PS3 sales.

No, the weapon Sony has are pricecuts, the PS3 didn't even hit the magical pricepoint of 199$/euros. Add a multimillion dollar ad campaign new PS3 colors and PS3 will likely close the gap with the 360.

2 situations can happen:

1. PS3 hits 199$ new colors in 2011 and the gap is not only closed, but will show a 3 million lead for PS3 in January 2012

2. PS3 hits 249$ new colors in 2011 and the gap will be 2-3 million in January 2012.

I think the 2nd option is more likely, a 100$ pricecut seems a bit much eventough PS3 is making money for a whole year now.

Still think that after seeing LBP2 sales(OK, not great), that it just shows that the PS3 still doesn't have a system defining game or games that make people(other than gaming nuts-not meant to be a bad thing) buy their system.  I have or have had almost every gaming console for the last 30 years or so. And every time i got one, it was due to some particular game or group of games.  I do have the PS3(by the way, it's the best bluray player that i have) and buy very few games for it.  I do usually wait til they are $30 or less.  But for the 360, i seem to buy more games right at release.  As usual, i will throw out my disclaimer that i am of course only one person - so therefore do NOT represent a large sampling.  But, am representative of a large group of people in their late 30s to mid 40s who have a batch of kids and multiple game systems.  My group is mostly the Lemming group that i talk about alot.  They like to buy whatever the general media or what they hear about at work.  They do NOT do lots of research on gaming systems, as if you don't get gaming at this age, you never will.  So they just follow the crowd...........

Eh that's going a bit far.. It's like saying the Wii now appeals to FPS gamers because it has Goldeneye, Reflex, and Black Ops. I don't know about you, but I sure don't know any soccer moms or grandpas who bought a $300-$400 Xbox 360, and certainly not just for games like Kinect Adventures and Dance Central.. It doesn't seem like Kinect helped lift Xbox 360 hardware sales this holiday anyway, especially after the adjustment of - a million plus. I think the slim model, Halo, Black Ops, and the natural holiday boost were more the reason for the surge. Yes Kinect sold a lot during the holiday but I think a large chunk of those sales were current 360 owners.

Anyway, the gap will maintain roughly the same, with the PS3 possibly inching a bit closer as a result of its Japan advantage. Kinect may be helping the 360 for a bit, but only seems to be in the US, and it won't last even there if the Kinect games don't get any better.

I think Kinect has sold more casual software than Wii has sold core software. :-p

I mean Dance Central is going to outsell CoD games on the Wii.

The Kinect definitely helped console sales. I mean 360 sales were huge this holiday and many of the Kinect bundles were sold out. I doubt this happened because of core sequels.

Depends how you define "core" software. Some would say Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Zelda, Metroid Prime etc. are all core titles :P

Metroid Prime is core. Zelda and Mario Galaxy, no. But hey, that's just my opinion. You don't have to agree.

Eitherway, my point was Kinect made 360 far more popular in the casual market and that should help 360 sales throughout the year. Metallicube seems to disagree and thinks Kinect has had no real impact in moving consoles.

That does seem to be the primery question of the thread.

Will Kinect move consoles? (or continue to)

Until we get more number from MS it'll be difficult to tell, but I think it'd be silly to assume it's had no impact in the US and UK. Other regions I'm not so sure about but it doesn't seem unlikely.

Will probably be closer or about the same. On one hand,  I dont think Kinect and the 360 slim revision will be able to sustain sell at current level all year long, next holiday might be different though. On the other hand, you have the exclusives PS3 line up plus a possible price cut.

I'm thinking that when some of the big exclusives come out for ps3 this year, the gap will close....

The kinect hype has already died down and is clearly not the least bit interesting to Europe or Japan at all...

PS3 dominates Europe... It dominates Japan.... But Americans seem to have become attached to buying an American console....

In fact if you really think about it... Microsoft really needs to make sure the xbox keeps smackin the PS3 in America every month... cuz without its great U.S. numbers... It will fall second to ps3 world wide every month..

“Absolutely, we can do much more with it. I don’t know if we are even close to 50 percent of PlayStation 3’s power at this point,” said Asmussen about God of War 3.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???
