Well... at this point I'd definitely say Reggie knows something we don't... not sure if another 5 mil by July is guaranteed, but maybe, just maybe, Nintendo is trying to pull another 3DS with the Wii2. i.e. announce at E3 (or maybe even have a secret special event for it around September) and release during Q1 or Q2 of 2012 so that by holiday 2012 there will already be some decent games from 3rd parties as well... that would definitely be interesting... NO WAY would MS or Sony be prepared for another launch before holiday 2012, especially not Sony if they plan to launch psp2 this year...

It also might mean a dual-console Zelda again, though personally that would piss me off a bit that N's most successful console may not get an exclusive Zelda...

On the topic of how they would/should release a console, I would personally suggest a much more compressed schedule. Suppose Nintendo announced at their fiscal year end that they were releasing a console in their next fiscal year, 6 weeks later started to tease their fanbase weekly with minor details about the system leading up to E3 (for example, release details about a new Mii system, or potentially announce that friend codes are avatar based and not game based), display the system at E3 with a full line-up of games and a release date 6 weeks later, and then let developers push their games heavily until the system is released. If done well, Nintendo could get far more press coverage leading up to their release of this console (and far more interest from their fanbase) because of how much information was being released so rapidly.

I remember Reggie saying Nintendo's aiming to do at least 50M in America's, it's looking likely now, less than 10M to go.
