Forums - Sales Discussion - Spain, where the Wii failed?

I'm Spanish resident in London, whenever I go to Spain to a Game shop they always say that the Wii is sold out, selling like hot cakes.

Nevertheless, the Sony brand is huge in Spain, why? it's hard to tell but here's what I think, just my opinion.

When the PSOne appeared on the market, the videogames where at its golden age, Super NES and Mega Drive (good old days)

The machines were view as powerful toys, so on the next step of the ladder I guess that the public started to demand fancy things.

When Sony presented their console, it wasn't anymore a console, it was made by Sony, so it was an electronic device, it was cool to have one, as it wasn't a console.

Still, people didn't rush to buy one, till the second or even third year, when it was very well known that a friend of a friend of a friend, for little money will trick your console so you'll never have to pay for games again.

There you go, perfect combination, cool electronic device + free games = TOTAL DOMINATION

When the PS2 came around, lots of people (apart from early adopters) were waiting till the first chips appeared on the market, so they could get their even cooler device + free games.

I can put my hand on the fire that people is sure that they'll chip the PS3 as well.

Then what some other people has mentioned before me, the image of the Sony product is not the one of a toy, and the fact that you play football games on it it makes it console of choice for the casuals.

It's funny but all my friends always assumed that (we all had PS2s) that the Sony console in Spain is for the casuals, as they play FIFA and Pro Evo, while having an Xbox or a Game Cube is more for the people that it's actually into gaming.

I know that that statement sounds crazy but, I'm sure more Spaniards on this forum could agree to some extent that that's the general view of them.

I currently own a Wii and a 360, planning on getting a PS3 sometime next year, I always get all the consoles in all generations, but this time I'll wait for the PS3 as right now doesn't have a lot of games that appeal to me. Bring on Gran Turismo and ICO/Shadow of the Colossus and I'm in.

Thanks

(In "English" ^^)

Is a false statement what spain sold more ps3 than wii's, Vgchartz doesn't have oficial numbers of nintendo solds, and the ps3 counts are only for the sony's shipment.

Here, all he makes indicate that the Wii sells more, the employees affirm that the Wii is sold much but that the PS3 and almost as much as the NDS, even in the Web "www.game.es", that is a reference in Spain (in games) the Wii almost always this to Top 15, then ps3 is around top 40.

Un saludo!

It's true that we don't know if PS3 has sold more than Wii in Spain, but we did get GfK figures just before the 40Gb/pricedrop and PS3 had almost caught up with Wii LTD (244K Wii Vs 218K PS3). It would be surprising if the PS3 hasn't overtaken Wii LTD in those 2+ months which included the pricedrop. For example, France, which had very similar PS3 sales to Spain sold 100K PS3s in the first month after the pricedrop.

i don't understand the troubles.

i see good numbers/sales for both: PS3 and Wii

I live in Portugal and go regularly to Spain and I see the same thing on both sides of the border. If you ask anyone on the street where do they play videogames, you'll find an huge percentage (bigger in Portugal) saying they use a Playstation, whether is a PS system, Nintendo or Xbox. The roots of the brand are so strong, that many of my friends (well educated fathers of family with degrees), come to my house to play Wii or PS2, and whatever they want, they just say "liga a playstation" (turn the playstation on), whether they want to play Wii or PS2... Still in Spain they have Nintendo Spain, which sucks, but is something, but in Portugal we simply have a representant of Nintendo Spain, which sucks even more and receives no budget to promotion whatsoever. Microsoft...it's hard to explain, but in both countries they simply don't give a shit about gaming. Vista for the win...

The Spanards know quality when they see it, and they definitely see value in the products they buy and support, I should know I'm one of them.

FAXANADU SAID: Oh my, all of you like bullfights and dance the flamenco all day? Hearing it from a spanish guy is quite surprising, but hey, if you say so, you must know.

Great to have some Spanish guys posting on here that are not named diomedes. Otherwise your country would be infamous for wiitards and toy like wiis forever.

entonces, bienvenidos a esta pagina de internet tan vacano.

I just meant the opposite, willing to make some people realize it is certainly unfair to believe some cliches. Someone even said that we treat women like hell, twisting the idiotic "latin lover" idea.

As we spaniards believe stupid cliches about people overseas, I certainly know this also happens to many people in USA. Just wanted to remind that.

I want to confirm that Wii is selling extremely well, but I would like to know how many consoles is Nintendo bringing to this country. I certainly think Spain is receiving a very low shipment rate.

As for Microsoft, results are not as bad as they seem. It is because of the amazing PS3 sales one could think that.

Yuk04 is pretty right. I mostly agree with him.

Even PS3 exclusives as Lair that IGn and Gamespot attacked have been highly praised .

I think that tells us what we need to know about the Spanish gaming magazines...

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
