Forums - Sony - Move: Sony doesn't expect big day one sales, hopes for Eyetoy like success

I'm surprised Sony isn't pulling out all the stops with Move's launch marketing and hype. As for their mentioning word-of mouth, someone brought up the fact that Kinect will have Facebook integration at launch, which I think will be an interesting marketing experiment (and social experiment).  Having pictures plastered all over Facebook of people playing Kinect games and seeing its affect on sales will let us gauge just how powerful a marketing tool it currently is.

Sony expects word-of-mouth success for Move

Sony has said that it is not expecting big day-one sales of its new motion controller Move when it's released in September.

Instead, UK managing director Ray Maguire predicted the peripheral will succeed through word-of-mouth, similar to the gradual uptake of the PlayStation 2 gadget EyeToy.

"Move is a natural extension in the same way as we brought EyeToy to PS2," he told our sister site Eurogamer.net.

"Exactly as with EyeToy in the PS2 days, it's a product that needs to be sampled. You need to get your hands on it. You need to understand it. You need to try it.

"Am I expecting a massive day one? Not particularly. We didn't with EyeToy, either. It went on to be massively successful."

Eye-toy like success?   so it's going to be par with virtual nonexistence?  I'm a little more optimistic than that

wow talk about about spin in the headline :S

Move's success will be in the long run and not the short run.... as I have been saying so for ages now.... Eyetoy is just an example he used....doesn't mean they want the same amount of success or anything cuz clearly Move will be way bigger than eyetoy

and as for word of mouth and your FB example...what does that even mean? That doesn't = great word of mouth...it's baout the experience the people recieve over time..it doesn't matter if it's Kinect/Move, if the experience is less than promising = bad rep...even on FB lol

Ugh.  Sony considers this EyeToy 2?  Is this a major attempt to downplay expectations or are they really not expecting much?  EyeToy is not a major part of the Playstation's control schemes.

You hardly ever hear about EyeToy, yet you've probably heard a fair amount of press and game conference spoilers, etc on Move.  Sony is giving Move way more attention, and based on that I'd expect Sony would push for a higher amount of sales than what we have with Move.

This whole thing is spin...if you read the original interview, the guy just tries to point out eyetoy didn't do half bad considering it's horrible start....they never say we expect Move to be as successful as the eyetoy or anything. He is referring to how they think move will be a success in the long run and not short term. Horrible example to use I know, but they definately not treating this product as Eyetoy..it's a bait OP

The EyeToy is valid because it had a respectable success...  for example EyeToy Play sold near 4M on PS2... so 4M of EyeToy sold just with it.

This is just one game.

By the end of 2008 EyeToy sold over 10.5 million units for PS2 only... I guess a success.

So... I'd better search before talking that a product was not a success.

If Kinect or Move sold more than 10M this generation... I would say it was a success.

It hasn't been that good this gen, and the comparison that the author wants us to make is how the eyetoy has been doing lately.

Thanks for posting that. Most people think EyeToy was a complete fail, but it wasn't. It definitly didn't have a huge impact/success, but its' sales were not bad.
