The only difference I can think of between the current reality and this hypothetical alternate universe without Halo is that the other universe would still have cool FPS games that make you work to find health instead of just standing around like a jerk while it recharges.  I think that's the worst thing to happen to the genre honestly.  Now gamers get rewarded for standing still in video games.  I don't play games to stand still (except for certain parts of Wii Fit).  What a joke.

yeah because backtracking through a level with low health on the lookout for a healthpack is so much more fun...

Glad those times changed.

To some people it is (more fun), and for a very simple reason - you don't have effectively unlimited HP reserves, so you have to be on your toes constantly and not just in case of the occasional instakill attack. In Halo you can tank just about anything outside plasma grenades/swords and regain your energy by jerking off behind the nearest corner.

And yes, I've beaten Halo.

EDIT: OT:

For me, the effect would've been negligible. As for the shooter genre as a whole - hell if I know. Microsoft would've probably dropped out of the console race after the first round, and shooters would've been fewer, further between and not outright clones of each other.

I dont think health packs are something people want to go back to. If thats the only contribution Halo has made, then at least it has the distinction of removing one of my most hated things about shooters.

It is a simple FACT that the FPS genre on consoles would be way smaller and we would have never seen games like Killzone 2, Modern Warfare, Resistance, and others.  The list of developers around the world who agree with this is massive.

Ken Levine who created Bioshock and is an amazing developer, said himself that without Bungie and Halo Bioshock could have never happened.

People love to hate on Halo but they need to realize that without it they wouldn't be getting anywhere near as awesome FPS's.

You are aware the first Halo had healthpacks, right?

I haven't played it since it came out.  But it still had rechargeable armor right?

A world without halo? A man can dream.

Ironic considering your PSN Avatar is a Killzone Helghast.

Killzone wouldn't even exist without Halo sooo......

I'd totally be cool with that. I just like the helghast look. And without halo the gaming world would be a much better place.

I probably wouldn't play games as much as I do now. I would probably have a Wii just to play old Mario games once in a blue.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Pretty leading "What if".

Given Halo is widely acknowledged with driving Xbox sales and giving MS the lead in online FPS on consoles it's fairly likely that, unless MS where very lucky, without Halo they'd probably have failed to make enough gains in the videogame market.

I suspect FPS/Online would have come to consoles anyway, but without Halo it would have taken a lot longer.

You've gotta give MS credit for buying up Halo / Bungie as just what they needed for the Xbox.  The game literally made the console.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

? No it wouldn't, going by the fact it pleases more than it displeases.
