Forums - Sales Discussion - Nintendo, Sony, Capcom Quarterly Data (Apr-Jun 2010) out Tonight

More Monster Hunters news...

Monster Hunter Frontier 360 shipped 130,000 in Japan this quarter.  It's also getting a premium rerelease for the "Season 9.0" in September.

MoHun Felyne Village (the Animal Crossing-ish PSP spinoff) is getting smartphone and SNS releases too.  Maybe we'll see it on iOS and facebook?

Wow the crazy currency fluctuations are hitting hard, I wonder if the 3DS R&D is in there as well, seems like that bad boy would take a good chunk of change to develop plus they're already starting to produce them and getting ready for a world wide launch, so production without anyone buying the product yet.  Gotta wonder how this year will go down overall, I'm thinking there might be some price changes coming...

Sony's losses are due to all the electronics being tied in together, still... the company is hurting and the restructuring hasn't helped much rather just slowed the bleeding.

Any 3DS produced and all materials aquired would be listed as assets in the balance sheet. They are trading one asset which is cash for another asset in terms of physical product so therefore you wouldn't see it.

Except you have to pay the workers producing the handhelds and commission any other factories to produce parts you need so the money you pay them is an operating loss as well.

Capcom figures for the quarter, from their platinum titles list...

  • Lost Planet 2 (360, PS3) 1,500,000
  • Super Street Fighter IV (360, PS3) 1,300,000
  • Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) 700,000 (1,800,000 ltd)
  • Resident Evil 5 (360, PS3) 100,000 (5,400,000 ltd)
  • Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP) 100,000 (3,100,000 ltd)
...Tri officially becomes Capcom's best selling console exclusive this gen, beating out Dead Rising (1.6m), Lost Planet 360 (timed exclusive, 1.5m) and RE4 Wii Edition (1.7m).

Wow that's an interesting little fact never knew that RE4 sold better than games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet.

Yeah.  Capcom's Platinum games list isn't exactly accurate (MH3 is 1.84m total now, SSF4 is actually 1.35m) but this gen for console million sellers...

  • Resident Evil 5 (360, PS3) 5,400,000
  • Street Fighter IV (360, PS3) 2,900,000
  • Devil May Cry 4 (360, PS3) 2,500,000

  • Lost Planet 2 (360, PS3) 1,500,000

Ninty posted a huge loss (what R&D? lol most of the R&D isn't done by them, spin it all you want)

Actually Nintendo had a $500 million but took on a $794 million one time exchange rate charge resulting in the posted $288 million loss.

No spin, just facts.

Actually I don't very well understand what "foreign exchange loss" suppose to mean. I need a basic lesson on accounting and/or economics to clear things up.

Nintendo's sales are mainly made abroad, so they recieve their payment in USDEUR. It's naturally to expect they are to be hit by exchange rates this year harder than last year (afaik USD is ~5 yen cheaper on average for reporting period, EUR compared to yen is down a few points as well, though overall sales are lower than for the same quarter last year). They netted $475 in Q1 of FY 3/2010, how these marginal changes in exchange rates translate into net loss of $283M?

:P cuz cuz cuz cuz this kinda thing only afffects Ninty where as MS and Sony are immune to stuff like this...DUH!

actually they are, sony has financial branch which would handle this sort of thing and microsoft is a non-Japanese company, therefore not effected in the same way by the strong yen,

Here it is

I don't know where to find the report of Sony about the quarter but here I found this

They shipped 2.4 million this quarter, up 1.1 million from the same quarter last year - huge jump

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.html

They shipped 38.1 PS3's as of today

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 12th Sep 1999 to 03rd Jul 2010:

Console PS3
Total
35,793,963

2,306,037 PS3s on shelves ?

2m in channel doesn't sound far fetched, especially since PS3's no longer supply constrained.

Yes it does.

I am really starting to question Sony's ship numbers. Via NPD their Apr-Jun PS3 sales were 636k. In Japan I believe they've been averaged about 20k/week, so times 13 weeks =260k. So lets estimate about 900k in the USA Japan.

So where did they ship another 1.5 million?? Even if you assume Europe was equal to the USA in sales, thats only 600k more. And then yes I understand there's a few more markets too, but those are the biggies. It strains credibility.

Wondering if Sony is double counting some systems shipped like they used to do with PS2 or something.

No, you're an idiot. Sony cannot lie on their Quarterly figures, NPD, Enterbrain, etc are estimates based on a formula, if you're gonna doubt something, doubt the estimates, not the accurate figures provided by the manufacturer.

bullshit ps3 is definetly in need of adjustment if 360 was less than a mil behind shipments i would say ps3 would be around the same probably a million undertracked considering there only selling 120k a week 2.3 mil on shelves would take like 4 months at that rate to sell out and i doubt they overshipped that much at all and wow at ps2

Isn't shipments = sales as justification for adjustment arguments grounds for a ban these days?

360 is badly supply constrained in most regions at the moment, old stock is drying up and the S models sell out within hours of hitting shelves.  360 now is where PS3 was nine months ago supply wise.  PS3 stock is now plentiful though...

360 is not suppy constrained anywhere.
