Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3DS Features Software Install!!!

Nintendo has packed 3DS with so many features that it's not even promoting some of the major ones. Today's Nikkei detailed one such silent feature: software install.

According to the paper, gamers will be able copy 3DS software to internal memory. Multiple games can be stored with the system in this fashion. You'll be able to switch between games by selecting a title from the system's main menu.

The paper notes that due to this feature, there'll be no need to swap cartridges. When outside of the home, you won't need to carry game cartridges with you.

Nikkei is a financial paper, so it obviously didn't get into the specifics on how this installation system will work. We'll have to wait for Nintendo to provide clarification.

Can the 3DS get any better?!!! This will be the HandHeld EVER!!!!!

I have no doubt the 3ds we saw will be slightly altered when released.

That is incredible.  How I love you already, 3DS.

I dont think this is true. They must have misinterpreted something. Too easy to pirate.

Well this is great news, I wonder how they'll pull this off while still preventing piracy (one install per game to allow used game, games linked to each system, games linked to an account) there are upsides and downsides to each, I myself hope games are linked to an account.

That's a huge door to barricade, Nintendo.

I think this proves more than ever that the 3DS is as much a natural evolution of the DS as it is attempting to prevent phones from disrupting their core business.

Tease.

That's pretty cool! I'm sure Nintendo will take measures to prevent piracy. The silent-update thing might be used for that end, forcing the system to update when in reach of a wireless network (and an update is available), even when it's closed. Dunno though, but I could see Nintendo do something like that.

I agree that Nintendo's aversion to piracy makes this a bit hard to believe.

However, I also think there are two things worth considering:

  1. Nikkei has had an excellent track record on reporting previously unknown information about Nintendo products.
  2. There was a discussion in one of the Iwata Asks segments about how Nintendo briefly considered adding a second cart slot to the DSi. The idea was to increase the number of games available to play at any moment, without the burden of carrying around a bunch of other extra bits. Apparently some of the designers really liked this idea, but ultimately gave up on it due to design/size limitations.
