Forums - Gaming Discussion - Western developers are ruling Japanese developers this gen!

Hey guys,

I just noticed I have just very few Japanese games this gen. I own 29 Xbox 360 games and only 5 of them are from Japanese developers. Is it just me or did Japanese games lost their appeal this gen.

I think Western developers are really leading over Japanese developers.

I think this gen truly put the Western developers in the lead over Japanese developers.

It is interesting that, besides the Wii Fit / Wii Sports / Wii Music etc etc games, there are VERY few new Japanese franchises this gen. Western developers created HUGE new IPs like Gears of War, Modern Warfare (Yeah I know CoD was there before, but MW is like a new franchise), LBP, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed and now RDR etc.

The best selling new Japanese games are Dead Rising, Lost Planet and We Ski or Lost Odyssey. ( I did not a BIG research, so feel free to add some games) Don't get me wrong, there are Japanese franchises that sold well, but they aren't new like Resident Evil 5, MGS IV, FF XIII etc etc.

Do you agree that Western developers really outplaced the Japanese competition this gen?

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

so thats why i dont buy games anymore.

I don't know, it might be more of a 360 issue.

I have quite a few Japanese titles :

MGS4, Re5, Demon's Souls, Bayonetta, DMC4, FFXIII, KWC, Star Ocean 4, Soul Calibur 4,...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

from a new ip stand point yeah but Japanese developers who have had games from previous generations are still doing great this gen.

Yes, agree completely. Japanese games are starting to become old-fashioned.

It's not bad when you are Nintendo, who is amazing at making classic arcade-style games, but devs like Square Enix and Capcom are almost a whole generation behind Western devs, stuck with the same old and tired formulas.

This is a recurring theme this generation, but i ultimately think the gaming media has just latched on to the idea that the West is ahead, or irretrievably different. Aside from the RPG realm, i fail to see the difference.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

On the 360 I have:

Lost Odyssey
Infinite Undiscovery
Tales of Vesperia
Last Remnant
Blue Dragon
Fable 2
ThrilleVille
The Simpson's Game
Too Human

5-4 in favor of Japan

On PS3 I have:

3D Dot Game Heroes
Beatles Rock Band
Buzz: Quiz TV
Call of Duty 4
Demon's Souls
Devil May Cry 4
Disgaea 3
Final Fantasy XIII
Folklore
Heavenly Sword
InFamous
Lair
LittleBigPlanet
MLB 2k7
Oblivion
Grand Theft Auto 4
Metal Gear Solid 4
MLB09 The Show
Killzone 2
Ratchet and Clank Future: ToD
Red Dead Redemption
Resistance
Resonance of Fate
Rock Band 2
Guitar Hero 3
Eye of Judgement
Unreal Tournament 3
Valkyria Chronicles

9-18 in favor of Western titles.

My purchases definitely lean toward Western titles, but in terms of which I enjoyed most goes to the Japanese titles.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

WESTERN > JAPANESE...nough said

Red dead Revolver was around last gen

But yes. I have a lot more western games then I do Japanese. But I actually have more Japanese games this gen then I did last

western still fails having a decent not scifi storyline and likeable characters.
