Just curious if anyone here happened to play Modern Warfare 2 or either Gears of War to see the story unfold.  My feeling is that both games execute in great level design and delivery, but the stories aren't anything to write home about.  In the case of Modern Warfare 2, the story is a mess, but delivered top notch.  Gears of War is classic space marines, with maybe some tweaks with backstory in there, but really not that memorable.  However, I am asking here if people feel different.  What is in my mind now is the humor video where the guy complains about motion control and wants to play a game for STORY.  And I am wondering WHAT story is so memorable in the area of videogames, particularly among FPS titles, that you play it for that... rather than cool gameplay.

These games have story which is lacking...but at least its coherent and it takes up less than 10% of the time spent with the game.

So I don't think anyone should bitch that these games have lame story. And no one should certanly play them for their story alone.

MGS4 on the other hand...

I always play games for the story, which is why MW2 was such a freakin' disappointment, it was TERRIBLE! As a Sci-Fi nerd, I totally got into Gears 1/2 storylines, because I can get into just about any Sci-Fi storyline, and it is kind of unique. Can't wait to see the end of the story.

I didn't really notice the story in MW2.

I buy all my games primarily for the single player campaigns, I gave up half way through MW2, but I loved the first Gears of War. I do enjoy some FPS stories though, Bioshock, The Darkness, Assault on Dark Athena, System Shock 2, F.E.A.R. etc. I don't think people give game stories enough credit, I'd be hard pressed to find many action/adventure movie with a better storyline.

SP are so 90's.

The only games i play for story are games with no MP or shitty MP like UC2.

They barely have stories, especially Gears 1. I barely knew what the hell was going on in that game.

I kinda did for MW2 but I played Gears of War 1/2 for there stories. I definitely can't wait to see how the Gears 3 story ends.

As I stated before, I don't believe that a great game necessarily requires a great story.  It requires sufficiently good gameplay, and proper difficulty pacing, plus the ability to surprise from time to time (novelty).
