Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy XIII - Impression time

FFXIII is total garbage. Compulsory tutorial for the first third of the game- 15 hours is a joke. Most games can be completed within 15 hours. But this will take 15 hours of your time to get through the boring chapters. Another 15 to 20 hours on the longest chapter before you finish the last two chapters in the last 10 hours. Long drawn out boss battles towards the end. 40 to 50 hour game to finish the main story. Side missions can only be accessed when you have completed the main story.

The story is utter crap and does not make any sense. The characters are whiny emo kids. The characters know what is going but the gamer has no idea what is going on. Why should we really care about Cocoon or saving the planet we do not get attached to the characters in this game to really care about saving them. Character development is very poor in this game.

Typical line used over and over: "Cocoon, fa'cie, l'cie, focus, focus, focus".

Battle system is complex if it was left to manual commands. Using ATB and you can more or less just press X all the time for most of the game. The Paradigm shift battle system is crap. Options with the classes which are more or less the same: defend or attack- depends on the situation. The game would of been a lot better if they had the leveling system. The boss battles are so boring and pointless. Have to stagger all the enemies but it takes so long to finish them off. FFXIII does not even play like a FF game. This is not Final Fantasy. Go from one cut scene, boss battle to the next and follow a linear pathway for first 15 to 20 hours of the game. Being forced to enter every fight. You can not just run away or sneak up on your enemy for a surprise attack.

FFXIII sound track is totally forgettable the music does not stand out. FFXIII only shining light is its cotton candy graphics. 1080p FMV scenes on the PS3, gameplay in 720p.

FFXIII without the FF name branded on it would of received a much lower score than the low 80's average on metacritic. Below 70 average would of been fair if it did not have FFXIII as its name.

Worst main series FF game. If this is the future of the FF series well it is a very bleak future. Squeenix have failed to deliver.

It took them what? 4 to 5 years to make the most linear front loaded JRPG ever! The story and characters are forgetable and the voice acting ( If thats what you call acting) is on par, if not worse then SO4. The class type progression is just as linear as the exploration with battles consisting of doing the same routine over and over. For it to take 15 to 20 hours to get to the good parts is a fucking joke. I'm with ya man. If this is the future of Final Fantasy then I'm done with it. SE do not let this moron director do other Final Fantasy again.

First off, the first fifteen hours are not a tutorial. The first one or maybe two hours are a tutorial, which sucks, I agree. The first fifteen hours contain some of the hardest JRPG gameplay any Final Fantasy has ever contained, both because of the relentlessly fast paced battles and the thinking ahead required to know what paradigms will end the fight the fastest.

ATB doesn't stand for auto battle. It stands for active time battle...

Wait a sec... did you just repost the destructoid review? If not, you have a few lines which are basically plagiarized from it...

lets see... maybe you are the sissy gamer if you thought the first battles in any FF game were hard?? in fact most of the "random" battles have always been attack attack attack attack fight finished go to menu heal the party.

wait until you actually have access to the whole battle system, and you will see that it is a lot more strategic AND more action oriented than other jrpg's.

so, controlling one character is strategic now?

shall we go back in time?

ff 7 - controlled 3 characters all with ct bars, battles are not turn base hence enemies keep on attacking when their ct bars are full ev if you still need to think.

ff 8 - controlled 3 characters all with ct bars same as 7

ff 9 - again, same as 8

ff 10 - again, controlled more than  ONE character.

all these ff games needed you to strategize and make use of your party to its fullest

then we have all those other jrpgs where you need to worry about more than ONE character.

ff 13 - 1 character. wow and you call that strategic? you can set your other "ai" team to heal when needed then play on auto. youll still win. hurt? poition = heal all! hell yeah! lame!

if you think controlling 1 character is strategic then you sir are a lame sissy gamer.

1. Stop calling people names, grow up

2. You have no Idea what you are talking about, seriously.

I think this is the worst final fantasy I have played so far I'm only in chapter 6.

Reasons in no particular order:
The story is horrible I don't like how they split up the characters. I think it would be better to develop team comradery before splitting up characters

The constant line following on the map gets old fast and I miss talking to people in towns.

The upgrading system is the worst I have ever seen it is boring and gives little freedom of choice in building your character.

The battle systems is boring and is way worse than 10 and 12.

The boss battles often get boring as they take forever. This wouldn't be a problem if the battle system was actually fun.

The best thing going for the game is the graphics which kick ass!!!
I hope this improves, still the game is enjoyable, but is the worst I have played (those being 7-13 excluding the stupid mmo).

I'm just waiting for someone to royally bitch slap Hope.

Much agreed there shouldn't even be stupid kid main characters in these games anyways. Intead of SNOW always getting punched by the women it should have been that little weiner.

So far, it's so so. I don't hate it but I don't love it so far. I'm about 20 hours in. Vanille and Hope have been grating my nerves. Hope has finally started to get better. Vanille is just TOO damned cheerful.

I'm in the middle of the road on the battle system. Some of the concepts I like but unless you put the battle speed on slow, manual control isn't advisable. I flat out dislike some of the classes. The Eidolon battles are a pain in the ass. As it was mentioned earlier their usefulness is marginal.

I'm not impressed with the story thus far. I feel for the predicament that some of the cast finds themselves in, but I could careless for either Cocoon or Pulse at this point.

Basically, I'm glad I wasn't hyped for this game at all. If I had but I would have been severely disappointed. The game is missing that magic that makes want to playthrough it and see what happens. I hope my opinion changes but if I had to rate the game now I'd give it a 6/10. Barring a miracle, I can't see this game surpassing Lost Odyssey or Tales of Vesperia in my eyes.

Doesn't feel like a FF game att all too much missing.
Felt pretty boring the first 25 hours before you get to Grand Pulse, I'm still there after 6 hours running around doing missions and grind and explore,I'm in no hurry to continue the story yet, probably gonna stay in Grand Pulse for atleast 10 more hours.

So far it's still FF6->FF9->FF7->FF8->FF10->FF13---------------------------->FF12.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Not hating it and not loving it. JRPG on rails is a pretty accurate description for it (might feel different for that talked about chapter 11, as I'm still on 6, but it probably won't make a huge difference for the overall impression).

I don't have a problem with the characters or story, but I'm just not having much fun going through the game. I actually went back to some SO4 grinding in the middle of it because it got boring.
I like both turn based and action battle systems, but FFXIII's isn't hitting a sweet spot.

this is for not a good Final Fantasy game, the only ones it is better than is 1+2+12, at least in my opinion..

oh and btw i have defeated the last boss...

The battle system to mention something is what i dislike the most, it feels tedious, and at the end of the game you are just beginning to get annoyed with it.
I don't like that you only control one character at a time, since most of the time it seems that the AI is just using what I would have been used if i controlled them but just used auto-battle, and since auto-battle often uses less than optimal abilities this annoys me.

The story is weird, the whole story seems so strange and odd to me, even more so than earlier final fantasy stories, and with the linearity it makes sure you dont miss a thing.

I miss having a world map, and i mean a real world map where you control a mini version of you party leader, like in the past games before they started FFX.

when the game is as linear as it is, this takes away all incentive to play through it one more time, and since the sidequests are just these missions from these stones i do not see anything of interest there either.

It is by no means a bad game, it just doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy to me, i dont know what would describe it as but i have never played a game more linear than FF13 in this genre.

My own top 11 of the final fantasies i have played:
1. FF6
2. FF7
3. FF9
4. FF10
5. FF8
6. FF4
7. FF5
8. FF13
9. FF1
10. FF2
11. FF12

i have not played 3 and 11 enough to give honest opinions.

all of the above is an expression of my opinions and should not be regarded as facts.

edit: forgot to mention the music:

The Music i find very bland and forgettable, and i really miss hearing Uematsu's music, i played through the whole game and not once did i hear the prelude theme or the prologue theme which has pretty much been present in any final fantasy since the beginning.

if you'd ask me if could remember a single song from FF13 i would not be able to.
