Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 sales hit 3 million !!

Christopher_G2 said: Yojimbo said: I still believe that PS3/Wii numbers are to high. The companies need to tell more official sales numbers and not shipped. And 360 number are too low I suppose you think. How do you know? There's never been official confirmation the system crossed the 10 million sold mark. I actually think this site estimates pretty darn close to actual numbers. They're not what the companies have said to have shipped, they're estimated sales numbers factoring in estimates for North American sales for March.
Microsoft said that they shipped 10.4m consoles 2006 and after 4 months xbox360 sales has not reached 10m. If I have understood right Nintendo said they shipped 6m consoles for 31 march 2007 and we hade 6m number a week before. That did not seem right, I know that the Wii sells really fast but atleast it should take a week or 2 if it even sells out everywhere.

I was thinking they might have sold out as well... but I forgot the PS3 isn't $600 us dollars it is more like $800 to $1000 there, in some countries even more than that. So thinking about that and how the PS3 broke records despite selling %60 of their stock in two days, I don't know how I could realistically expect them to sell mor than that. I would have had a hard time convincing myself to go and drop $800 much less $1000+ on a PS3 and I am a huge fan of the PS3.

That site constanly refreshes with new numbers. Go there once, then again 2 minutes later and you'll find each console marked is on a ticker.

Good to see this site is still going

The European market's the same size as the North American market. For Sony anyway. The other two aren't ever going to figure Europe out, and I don't think Nintendo even wants to anyway. I don't think Sony would miss their supply target on purpose. It was a pretty aggressive target, but if they missed it, it would be supply related rather than demand related. They couldn't care less if half the stores are stocked... they'd prefer it. Nintendo's numbers are shipped rather than sold as well.

What supply target? Didn't they promise 1 million PS3's for europe? I know it didn't sell out but I heard they really did ship 1 million. Am I missing something?

What's funny about this is in less than 2 weeks EU has purchase as many consoles and Japan has in 5 months.

It's all about the games, sc, and right now Sony isn't delivering in Japan, and don't look like they will until June at the earliest with the Hot Shots golf game I do believe, and that is the only significant title for the month for it.  I haven't seen a schedule for PS3 past June, but in Japan the Wii has several significant releases between now and July. :)

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

Didn't Nintendo pass 3 million months ago?

Untrue, out of all the hw companies Nintendo is the most straightforward regarding these numbers. Their most recent report of 3million DSes sold (not shipped) within the UK for example.

"The things we touch have no permanence."

Only partially relevant - PS3 software sales dropped by 66% (on average?) on the 2nd week of release in the UK. They also lost the #1 spot on the charts to the new C&C (PC) (no surprise really). http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23953
