I have seen multiple moderations made by you here on VGC, and to say the very least, they are utterly appalling.

I highly dislike injustice, so you really do not deserve to remain as a moderator.

Well, I already apologized to Hollygamer and the mod team thinks you're over-exaggerating. By your logic, the entire mod team shouldn't deserve to be moderators. Good luck trying to convince everyone with that notion.

Nothing against you personally Aura, but it seems like in some cases, you're handing out 'moderation warning' without much deliberation.

Anyway, I am glad for you that the mod team is on your side. Hope excessive moderation from you will be a thing of the past.

Hey Aura7541,

I just thought ill comment here since freedom of speech in other articles isn't allowed unless everyone has to agree on the same thing. Don't worry this is not an attack on you. Just a quick discussion/response.

You went on try to prove me wrong by linking a Link Stating *Exclusive games do not need to be the de facto driver of hardware sales, but they can be significant contributors. And the more exclusives you have, the greater the cumulative effect.*

And if anyone actually read my replies I stated *Exclusives are not the Be all and End all for a console and Exclusives do help.* That's stated in my replies. Its exactly what iv been saying yet it ended up a disaster.

I think I was personally banned for the wrong reasons however that's another story. Ill let it go and drop the subject but it would be nice if people actually read my responses instead of attacking someone based off the usual few that report on there own dislikes.

This is not an attack on you, I just thought its easier to discuss with you personally. And thanks for the info.

Ill be careful what I post on these forums, however keep a close eye out on those who tend to attack and twist just to see people get moderated. Which is what happen to me all the time, I am use to it.

You began the conversation with this line: "Look at all those 1st party games toping the list for PS and Xbox haha"

I don't need to explain to you what was wrong with this sentence.

The problems of your argument were that it is based on software rankings of one market. To explain, rankings only show how one game sells relatively to another game. However, it does not divulge the actual amount of units that game sells. A game can be ranked below the Top 10 and still sell a whole lot of units.

If you remember, I mentioned that Horizon already sold over 3.4 million as of June 5, 2017. If we are to assume that the US percentage of software sales is strongly correlated to hardware sales, then Horizon sold around 1.13 million in the US (about 1/3 of the PS4's sales come from the US). And again, this number is as of June 5, 2017. The game likely saw a good uptick in sales when the Frozen Wilds came out and definitely went up in sales during the holiday season.

However, for the sake of argument and to show I'm not trying to purposely fluff up the numbers to suit an agenda, let's just say Horizon sold 1.13m copies in 2017 in the US. The highest possible amount of sales a game outside of the Top 10 rankings can achieve is 1.13m - 1 units. That is still a lot of units. Quite a lot, actually.

And I probably don't need to explain how judging the effectiveness of 1st party games based on just one market is not a great idea. The average consumer in each market is different and thus, the ability of a 1st party game to draw in hardware sales will vary.

Ok so my first comment wasn't the best one to start out with, however I didn't label one out of the other. I labelled both consoles is lacking 1st party games in that month. Which is not wrong from the truth.
My entire point is exactly what you linked me, 1st party games don't need to be the major focus yet they can help, games in general help, they don't even need to be 1st party, its just 1st party games are a lot easier to market which is why I debate marketing is the most important thing in selling a product.

So how many of those Horizon games were given out in Bundles? That 4m figure could possibly be 2m with the help of the PS4 selling extremely well. Perfect example is look at Drive Club, a game that went on to sell 2.3m copies.. Sony shut the studio down shortly after its release. How can a game sell so well yet fail? Drive Clubs sales came from majority of Bundles, it made its sales figures based off freebies and the PS4's success. Sony did not make much profit on that game even after selling 2.3m which is considered a great number. The Order was the same. UC4 doubled its Sales in one Xmas period when it was paired with every PS4 option available.
1st Party game sales are unfairly treated and fluffed to make a console look better. They get the special 1st party treatment of bundles and deals. There numbers are not something I follow close to because a lot of the time gamers end up with them even when they don't want it. I tip my hat off to Nintendo because they tend to make there sales off no bundles and price drops. Gamers actually go out of there way to buy them. (There are exception for PS and Xbox)

As I mention before that the WiiU flopped, which was a console filled with many 1st party exclusives.
He who has better marketing will have better sales. That's business, how you market your product weather its with your own games or a bunch of other games wont make a difference.

Question
How are Xbox games going to be rated these days now with Game Pass available? That will surely affect there sales numbers.

Some problems with your response:

"1st party games don't need to be the major focus yet they can help, games in general help, they don't even need to be 1st party, its just 1st party games are a lot easier to market which is why I debate marketing is the most important thing in selling a product."

This is a false dichotomy because you are presenting the scenario as if it is either 1st party games or marketing that sells a product. In fact, all factors can complement each other. Since a company's main goal is to earn as much profit as possible, it is preferable that you cover all bases instead of just a few. Neglect of some of these bases will lead to the incursion of opportunity costs.

"So how many of those Horizon games were given out in Bundles? That 4m figure could possibly be 2m with the help of the PS4 selling extremely well."

I need a citation on this. You cannot just pull numbers out of thin air. While my 1.13m figure is speculative, it is at least based on a statistic of another different factor which was US share of PS4 sales.

"Perfect example is look at Drive Club, a game that went on to sell 2.3m copies.. Sony shut the studio down shortly after its release. How can a game sell so well yet fail? Drive Clubs sales came from majority of Bundles, it made its sales figures based off freebies and the PS4's success."

This is does not tell the whole story nor is this an apples-to-apples comparison. Horizon is strictly single-player while Driveclub's main selling point is its multiplayer features. In addition, Driveclub was delayed for a much longer period of time than Horizon and suffered major issues at launch in regards to online functionality. The long delay and poor launch was what screwed Evolution Studios over on top of the fact that their previous games were not selling that well either like Motorstorm Apocalypse.

"1st Party game sales are unfairly treated and fluffed to make a console look better. They get the special 1st party treatment of bundles and deals."

This is more of a repetition of an opinion you already expressed, but with a different coat of paint. It is also untrue to complain that 1st party game sales are unfairly treated. It is simply easier to advertise 1st party games because they are owned by the company. The company doesn't have to pay money and earn permission to market a game from a 3rd party publisher.

"He who has better marketing will have better sales. That's business, how you market your product weather its with your own games or a bunch of other games wont make a difference."

And the ability to market well is also affected by the amount of 1st party games a company has as one of those factors. Once again, I point to my point about how factors that move hardware sales are not independent variables, but rather complementary.

"How are Xbox games going to be rated these days now with Game Pass available? That will surely affect there sales numbers."

Not really on topic, so I'm not really interested in answering unless you're asking this question more out of curiosity.

My point is 1st Parties are not everything, I am not saying we don't need them nor am I saying its smart to not have them. They help, they are the icing on the cake. However without good marketing, 1st party games wont do much, and if you market a 1st party game good enough you will see results, just like any game. Again look at the WiiU, poor marketing hurt it not the 1st party games.

I get the impression people think I am saying 1st party's are bad when I actually love them more then 3rd party games. I am just saying they don't need to be the main focus to move hardware. X1 sold the 2nd most amount of Units in Dec with the least amount of 2017 Exclusives. Switch busted down the sales door and will most likely end up being one of the best selling platforms with barely any games at launch and relying on WiiU Ports.

I am just curious because this will be a future trend to most Hardware Makers in the near future. Are they going to go off Downloads or Game Pass Members?

on 26 January 2018

@First paragraph

Similar logic can be applied to 3rd party games. They, too, would not do well without good marketing. If you look at EA, Ubisoft, and Activision, they put in large amounts of money into marketing to the point they equal to a large proportion of the games' budget.

The Wii U was marred by several problems, so you cannot attribute its woes to just one factor. The hardware, itself, was very flawed and its functionality was not as desirable as Nintendo had hoped. The 1st party games it did receive were solid for the most part, but they were few and far between.

@Second paragraph

That is not what people are thinking. Whether you love 1st party games or not is irrelevant to how well your points hold up to scrutiny. It's mere virtue signaling, honestly.

In addition, you continue to base your conclusions on a month (and in just one market) where average consumer habits are significantly more price-oriented than value-oriented than in non-holiday months. The XB1 selling the 2nd most in December still does not detract from the fact that it was significantly down YOY during the non-holiday months. I have Mat Piscatella's statements as proof of that.

And to handwave a handful of the Switch's games away as mere Wii U ports is also ignorant. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not just a port; it also offers more features. Same applies to Pokken DX. BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Arms, Mario + Rabbids, and Xenoblade 2 are strictly Switch exclusive. Disgaea 5 was surprisingly a hit on the Switch, as well.

Sure, you can keep saying it barely had any games during launch, but when that particular launch game could singlehandedly sell Switches at a brisk pace, why would Nintendo blow their load so early? It was a masterful strategy. Name me one other game where its sales exceeded the sales of the platform it's on.

@Last paragraph

Physical media still has a place and thus far, has co-existed with digital media rather fine. Of course, things are subject to change though the one thing that could prevent digital media from totally replacing physical media is game size. I expect the PS5 and next Xbox to utilize the higher capacity Bluray discs. Not everyone has superfast internet, so high capacity Bluray will have the advantage in that context.

For Playstation consoles, especially, they sell well worldwide. Its markets include those whose average resident does not have access to fast internet, so physical media will still be more desirable.

on 26 January 2018

That's going to throw off the Sales comparison if there competition is basically giving away there games via a service. X1 Exclusives are not going to have high sales numbers compared to Sony and Nintendo due to this method (Not saying there not going to make money) however we wont know how many games there selling especially if half there install base use Game Pass.
I guess we have switch the focus more on actual memberships for Xbox until the other two jump in on the parade.

NIS Apologizes for Seemingly Negative Comments Towards PS4

Not exactly sure. Famitsu did show that Gravity Rush 2's digital rate in Japan...
