They leave out FF8 (the best in the series bar 10) again? WTF SE?

I take this as the strongest sign yet that Square-Enix really has made up with Nintendo.

I haven't played a few of those, so I'm glad I'll get the chance.

Which Final Fantasy games do you recommend? Never really played one before.

Okay so I have never played a final fantasy game in my life (besides on the SNES classic for about 10 minutes).

Which one is a good place to start for newbs?

Any. There is no connecting storyline between them but there are a million common elements. Every game in the series has strong rpg gameplay, so it doesn't matter where you start.

Each of them has it's very own unique charm.

Miyamotooooo lol

Definitely the biggest surprise of the direct for me, not sure which to buy as I've had real ups and downs with FF.

Love I on PSP, didnt like II.
Liked III and IV on DS but not so keen on V for GBA.
Had VI but I seem to remember the cart broke part way in.
Crystal Chronicles was OK but I won't buy again.
The only modern version I've tried was XIII and while it was pretty there was a lot of running down corridors so I got bored.
Which to try next? I'm leaning towards XII and VII

Nevermind… already posted.

For first time if dont mind older type of graphics play VII, is want first to play more modern FF game first, play FF X.

You seem to like the classic ones mostly.  VII and IX are highly regarded in that gameplay style.  IX in particular is supposed to be quite similar tonally.  XII was the first modern one to ditch turn based gameplay.  Generally better regarded than XIII 1, 2, and 3.  And not nearly as linear as the original XIII.  A more fluent FF fan can explain the nuances.

Edit:  Correction there
