since the PP of ps3 has already dwindled below the break even point expect incomes to rise this quarter from the gaming division.

OK, how, are they going to actually sell tons of systems, do they have a plan?

currently I thought they still lose money onPS3??

They do still lose money on the PS3, dpmnymkrprez. They might've cut production cost of the PS3 by about 100 dollars, but it still costs more than 600 to make. And if they think about dropping the price anytime soon, the hole will get bigger.

but this time they would have to recover the high R&D of Cell as well.

last time in 2000 it was just the inclusion of dvd player that contributed to the losses.

In 2006 they have the Cell and Bluray. In 2000 they had the Emotion Engine and DVD.

Or do you think that "thing" was an off the shelf processor too?

the emotion engine was not even as powerful as the processors of that era.

the emotion engine was a tweaked version on a 333 mhz pentium supplied by INtel/the Cell's total production cost is a whopping 1.7 billion $. 60% of this amount is financed by SONY alone.

when ps3 was released 1ghz pentiums were widely availbale .

Cell on the other hand is leaps and bound ahead of other processors and probably u wont see anything as powerful as Cell before 2010 when intel unleashes 80 core chip.

pentium 3 was introduced a whole year  before the ps3 in 1999 ,february.

the mimimum speed of a pentium processor by the end of  1999 was 550 mhz which is much faster than the watered down emotion egine(@ 333mhz) in ps3 launched in 2000

No, really man, I am. I'm totally appalled by your presumptuous ignorance. I don't think it's something to be proud, though. That said I'll leave you with some info and references.

The Emotion Engine is MIPS based, not a x86 Pentium. It was designed jointly by Toshiba and Sony. You should read some more.

"According to MicroDesign Resources, it is twice the speed of a 733 MHz Pentium III and 15 times the speed of a 400 MHz Celeron at handling tasks like full-motion video (SIMD)." in Wikipedia - Emotion Engine.

"So which machine is more powerful? Well, if you're talking 3D gaming and you mean right now, I wouldn't hesitate to give the crown to the PS2." Jon Stokes, in Arstechnica - The PlayStation2 vs. the PC.

"The Emotion Engine is weird. It's so weird, in fact, that it took me quite a while to figure out how it works, and as a result, it's going to take me quite a while to explain it." Jon Stokes, in Arstechnica - A Technical Overview of the Emotion Engine.

KruzeS, you just don't know. Just google for that Japanese article where it explains how, over the past ten years, Intel has been secretly selling its tech to two of its largest competitors, IBM and Toshiba.
