I have read this thread and I am not understand the point, for me this sounds like somebody wants to try to start a flame war.
But here we go: I want to do a stupid comparsion. Its between two entertaiment forms, heck make that three by the way.
We have three forms of entertaiment that I love:
- Books, actuly even if I hang around here I most probarbly spen more time reading books than playing games.
- Movies, not a fanatic but some of my friends are
- Video games.
Of these three, number one is in deciline, number 2 is still big and number 3 is something that only nerds does (at least in Sweden).
Movies had a tremendous growth when Hollywood realised that their was one more audiance than male. In movies we also have the indy groups and some other stuff. A big amount of movies, some small, made by crap equipment and so on. There is at least a big difference in the market.
Books, if you ever have been in a bookstore you know that their is a great difference in books. Personally I mostly buy fantasy and science-fiction, does it angers me that somebody else buys detective novells? Not exactly, and this is what makes me wounder why Kwaad is so angry, because when we enter the video game market we find some difference:
Video game market, still a very young industry, have been through a big crash before and might do it again. The video game market has grown a lot the last years using party games and titles aimed for older people plus females. With titles like Buzz, singstar, guitarr hero and now Wii Sport we have seen that gaiming have start to go to new groups and even become more mainstream. Is that important?
Yes and the biggest reason is that there will always be a group of devlopers that want to make the really big games. To keep those devs alive we need to broaden the market so that there is a potentional possibility that that the market can sell more games.
Therefore I do welcome any wide spectrum of games: The big bugett games and the low budgett games, the games that goes for the old school and for the "new school". More games genres might mean more gamers, more gamers means more money and acceptance in the sociaty.
