NPD has always estimated Wal-mart numbers (with historic data, other means, and current trends). Still, the numbers are within 5% of exact sales, don't expect any magic additions to them.

I was refering to the way to combat the iPad and smartphones. That's not going to happen through adding more non-gaming features to handhelds. In fact, this is counterproductive, because it will only lead to comparisons that the handhelds will always lose.

So if Nintendo was smart, they would put out more games. That's the area where the iPad and smartphones cannot compete and as long as Nintendo puts games above everything else, Apple and friends cannot become a threat to Nintendo's business.

Nintendo got in trouble with the 3DS because they tried to sell it based on hardware. All the early commercials focused on people being impressed by the 3D of the system instead of showing off games (which weren't there, because Nintendo really believed that hardware sells hardware). Things improved since Nintendo went back to the business model of "a (portable) console is just a box that people buy in order to play Mario games" and once Super Mario Bros. 3DS releases, Nintendo's situation should improve even further. Then there's also Pokémon and others. That's what Nintendo needs to focus on.

i agree with you say, as i do most of the times, they don't need to compete tablets on the apps part but i think the adding of youtube or facebook is basic these days for an internet connected device

I really think that the Wii bombed in January. No numbers from Nintendo, no appeal to buy the console (games and WiiU), bad numbers for the HD twins and because Sony said the PS3 had solid numbers (yes I know it is PR but 140k are not solid).

Something like 100k would not surprise me (meaning 180k for PS3).

If no numbers come out, we will have to wait for other NPD reports going forward.

So new consoles around the corner?... The wii is going to be very low this coming months, 150k or less... So... Wiiu launch after e3 confirmed? I hope so!

The sad thing is xenoblade & TLS are releasing at this point, just when the wii is dying... I really hope nintendo has plans to continue with xenoblade & TLS for the future...

really, a terrible choice, and it's even more expensive in Europe...

could buy a powerfull enough mini-laptop with those money and play normal games on top of everything else, or buy a PSV/3DS

Wtf are with these numbers XD. I know its January and all but dyamm! I think there needs to be another tracking body to compare with NPD ( Like Japan Media Create and Famitsu). And one that actually tracks freaking WALMART. Especially for the sake of Nintendo( Impacts a family company like them the most.)
Well we'll have to see how this lines up with the next shipment( or sold to retailers or whatever) data.  Which sucks because all we get is worldwide shipping data.

P.S. Does anyone know why Amazon NA seems to stop selling almost anything Nintendo?
