Electronic Arts and BioWare's Xbox 360 and PC role-playing game Mass Effect 2 debuted at the top spot in the UK for the week ended January 30, Chart-Track said Monday.
The critically-acclaimed follow-up to the 2007 original was able to outsell Ubisoft's Wii-exclusive rhythm game, Just Dance, which topped the UK all-platforms retail charts during the previous two weeks.
Chart-Track said that Mass Effect 2 was "comfortably" in the top spot for the week on the all-platforms rankings, which lump together sales of all versions of a given title. It was able to secure the top position for the week despite only being available for two days in the region.
The original Mass Effect only got as high as number 12 (the original game launched on Xbox 360 first, and released months later on PC.
Chart-Track's report added that initial sales of Mass Effect 2 on Xbox 360 are "almost double" that of the original. Sales of the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 2 are around triple those of the PC version, the firm said.
Mass Effect 2 is being backed by a substantial marketing campaign by Electronic Arts. In the U.S., EA purchased premium TV slots, including an extended commercial during the recent NFL playoffs.
