With r505Matt elminating Xenoblade / my vote elminating Sakura Wars, the list is getting smaller.

Yeah, we're almost down to the big boys. My prediction is that this is going to be a three way run between Mass Effect 2, Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles in the end.

Nah, the very pro PS3 bias of VG will eventually shoot down Mass Effect 2. The final vote will be between Valkyria Chronicles / Demon Souls.

Still, I was impressed by Bioware. They could have played it safe on Mass Effect 2 instead they risked alot to stream line the class, combat & inventory systems. Rpgs do need to grow and incorporate more people or we will be left with low budget, low risk games and that would be boring.

I have yet to play Mass Effect 2 completely, but I don't see why the streamlining of RPG elements has led people to not calling it a RPG. Take for example Valkyria Chronicles. While it does have the elementary characteristics of an SRPG, most of them are extremely streamlined as well, especially when the focus of the action switches to a TPS mechanic, which facilitated the game way too much. Normal SRPG games have always a steep learning curve and some very high difficulty missions. Valkyria Chronicles had none of that, except if you were going for the A ranking in every mission. The only true difficult part of the game is when you do the hard skirmishes, but a SRPG shouldn't depend on side-missions to give the same fundamentals that other SRPGs give throughout normal game

In a sense, it would be fair not to call Valkyria Chronicles a pure SRPG as well then, since it's very different from an SRPG experience like Fire Emblem or Shining Force, but it's not the correct thing to do.

People should accept that all genres evolve and new mechanics are implemented constantly, whether is to the liking of the fans or to the dislike.

Anyway, OT: +Dragon Age: Origins
