The only two people who were seeking the Promised Land were either Sephiroth or Aeris. Aeris dies on CD1 and Cloud continues his search for the promised Land on CD 2 by going after Sephiroth.

On CD 2, Aeris has almost no relevance, except for the part of the activation of the White Materia.

Edit - You could also mean Hojo or Rufus, but I would put them all into Shin-Ra. That would be a little shaddy though, since their search is a bit intermitent during the game.

He wasn't dead per se, remember that he also set free Jenova from the Shin-Ra building.

But I see that your answer is Jenova, even though she and Sephiroth are two separate entities in the game. Sephiroth didn't die when Cloud stabbed him and threw him off the platform of Nibelheim reactor.
