Upgrading to 16 GB is pretty much useless, as Windows 7 64bit can only use up to 8 GB. It's a problem on my new computer. I can't understand why Windows only can recognize only so much ram.

sounds more like a hardware issue. Windows can regonize a lot more ram than that.

well not the first time i see it, all windows 7 many machines at work could only get to 8gb, maybe its registry problem i don't know.

mine did not have a problem but i have ultimate.

its probably the motherboard, a lot of motherboards limit the amount it can support.

edit: nvm, its something to do with the OS

Here are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of Windows 7:

  • Starter: 8GB
  • Home Basic: 8GB
  • Home Premium: 16GB
  • Professional: 192GB
  • Enterprise: 192GB
  • Ultimate: 192GB

Actually, you should wait for the video card until november. The second generation of Fermi is coming out then (First generation is in March). Since the first generation is always crap, waiting is advised. nVidia has Cuda and DX11, so that's a benefit. Additionally, if you play Dolphin on your PC, it'll crash on any ATI card after 15 minutes because there is a huge memory leak.

2nd generation? How so? What exactly are they going to do to the chip when TSMC hasn't even got the 28nm process ready yet? I don't think another respin counts as a new generation, nor can you say derivatives are a new generation either.

Read it on nVidia site.  They haven't announced what is in the second generation.  My guess is a better implementation of DX11's tessellation unit, hull shader, domain shader, and the stream out efficiency.

Overpowered CPU, crappy GPU. That's my honest take on it.

I seriously doubt any of that. They'll wait until the 28nm refresh for major changes.

wait. what? are you sure? I mean, theorectically, a 64-bit operating system should be able to recognize 263 bytes of RAM (9.2x1018 or 9.2 exabytes of ram). I can understand putting some sort of limit on it, but 16GB seems a little riduculously low..

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

What home user would realistically use more than 8GB? The professional market is different, hence the different ram support.

I wouldn't bother upgrading the video card until the next gen consoles are out. Pc games are becoming console ports with console graphics. The card you have is more powerful than the ps3 or the 360 graphics cards , so it will play almost all pc games on high settings.(yes i know there are exceptions).
