They've always been fighters stateside, it was you Brits that called them beat em ups,
Here in the states we call Final Fight and double dragon style games beat em ups,
I don't know what the Japanese called them, I'm pretty sure it is fighters, but on the side of neo geo games they are described as Battle action games, in english no less, but I don't know.
