Fanboy meltdown on VGC. Damage control by some fans. But will there be more sales adjustments made?

Yes, there are fanboy meltdowns. But it's much more than that! It's about reliability of VGC data now. 2mil 360's in shelves?? Is that normal? Ps3 overtracked by 1.1mil despite Sony seeming to be amazingly happy with sales? If you look closely, most data was adjusted from "Others" region. Which, if you think about it, is the one region where VGC really doesn't have a larger organization to compare its data with (as  far as I know). For example, when NPD and MediaCreate usually release their data, VGC adjusts accordingly if they have to. But in Others region, VGC does not have that. So basically, from what I can see, Others region is pure guesswork?? I'm confused.

so yeah, what exactly do these adjustments mean? do they mean this site can't rely on their own numbers and have to be constantly readjusting to other sources' data? And how do they readjust exactly? do they just take a couple of months and shave off some of their numbers until the match they "real numbers" ?  Isn't that admitting this site numbers are bullshit? There shouldn't be any "adjustments" at all, this looks bad, very bad.

The Other Other Europe/regions are pretty much used as a landfill for number dumping and nothing else.

Are you telling us...

that VGChartz is... doomed?

Whoa, Wii is at 49.4% marketshare now? Crazzyness! Just a while ago it was at like 48%... That's quite an improvement in such a short while.

actually we really dont compare our numbers to other sources inorder to adjust our data. the monthly NPD article and japanese sales article is a way to display our accuracy versus a company that has a way higher percentage of market coverage then us. we just have some sources that doesnt come in on a weekly or bi-weekly bases. Its a matter of our sources on how our estimates are.

I'm sorry, but I am not buying this. I love VGC, and will continue to come here because I love the community. But c'mon! The entire thread apparently came to the conclusion that VGC adjusted because of Nintendo's graph... How cna you say we don't adjust accordingly when bigger firms provide numbers? I'm not saying VGC doesn't have sources and such, but we DO adjust accordingly when bigger firms with more sources adjust. You can't possibly deny this!

All this means is that vgchartz is open about it's limitations. It's a small tracking service, the size of the samples they use (and the huge population of sold video games) leave a potential for error. The other trackers have more resources available to them, and thus have less potential for error, but they make mistakes sometimes too. VGChartz is open and honest about this, so they make adjustments when they find themselves to have been innaccurate.

As long as people understand that vgchartz is a more limited tracker than the others, there shouldn't be a problem. The numbers are still correct most of the time, and as such are useful and interesting enough. It has the advantage however of being free and transparent compared to the others.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Personally I have no problem with VGC being open with its limitations. But when some of the higher-up members deny the fact that they adjust accordingly to other data... I feel like I'm being lied to.

So, how is this Scandinavia and other Europe data just showed up from now where? Did someone called VGchartz and said, yeah we have this new data for you???

Secondly, for a site as clearly transparent as VGChartz, itsi mportant that our adjustments be as transparent as possible. Brett is doing the right thing in being open and clear about the adjustments he's making, because he keeps the integrity of his weekly numbers as much as is possible given his resources.

This is the point where I strongly disagree with you. With such high changes done "overnight", I'd have expected an editorial (or at least a main thread by the owner) explaining in detail what happened. Contrary to this, absolutely nothing was explained. The one explanation (inserted into this thread after xyz pages) that data for certain regions was overtracked for 3-4 years is dubious, at best. We have official shipping numbers from quarterly reports, and we also have the occasional data leaks from GfK which could have been used to raise a red flag. Add to the fact that this site is still giving estimates down to single digits ("77286 XBoxes sold in America last week" is not a meaningful number when doing an estimation, it is a mathematically precise number which is simply false in this context), it does make this site look less professional.
