Forums - Sales Discussion - Chart of Profit/Loss for the Big 3's Gaming Sector?

@TWRoO,

The file says $686M for the 6 months ending Dec 31 2009. Which is what I posted. The other figures are for the newest revised results. They now include the previous 2 years revised numbers with each years annual report. So with FY2009 I grabbed the FY2008 and FY2007 updated results.

Yes... all FY2010 figures are still the same as far as I can tell.... but what about the discrepancy between the first file I posted and wherever you got your figures from for FY2009 (ending June 2009) You posted 169 million, that spreadsheet says 108 million..... considering the spreadsheet has the numbers up to date through December 2009 I would think it has the adjusted FY2009 numbers as well.... and again other past spreadsheets have different numbers to those you posted.

I can't explain it myself, but it's pretty pbvious we can't trust one source for MS numbers (even on their own IR website) because some files seems to have numbers as they are originally posted for the year, while others show updated figures.

Maybe FY2009 will be adjusted. We should wait for the FY2010 report to see if FY2009 officially adjusted.

It's not just about the 2009 figures though, it's all the backdated numbers. (where did you get your list from by the way, as I haven't found that specific list yet)

Using the link I posted last... taking info from the excel files I get:

2003 - (1,191)
2004 - (1,220)
2005 - (485)
2006 - (1,284)
2007 - (1,969)

Yet from the Fiscal year reports (From the IR website... go to Annual reports... then to each year and find the notes section for each report... notes section has segment info usually as the last note (about note 18))

2003 - (938)
2004 - (1,011)
2005 - (464)
2006 - (1,329)
2007 - (1,945)

There are a maze of different numbers for each year... even using what are supposedly backdated numbers (the above list is using report 2009 to find 2007 etc) there are 2-3 different figures to find depending on where on the website you look.

Same place.

If you simply go to each FY report you dont get the updated results. They are currently publishing the previous 2 years updated FY numbers with the published FY.

FY2009 report has FY2009 and updated FY2008 and FY2007 numbers.
FY2008 report includes updated FY2006 report.
FY2007 report includes updated FY2005 report.

I am looking in the actual reports not spreadsheets.

Yes that's exactly where I got that last list from... in the report (not spreadsheets) I guess you got your figures from the "Discussion and Analysis section then.
http://www.microsoft.com/msft/reports/ar09/10k_fr_dis.html

Wheras in the same report (and in the same place for past reports) there is a notes section detailing the segment informtaion with different figures.

http://www.microsoft.com/msft/reports/ar09/10k_fr_not_21.html

To be honest I would much more trust the excel spreadsheets that I got the info from in the first list I gave:
2003 - (1,191)
2004 - (1,220)
2005 - (485)
2006 - (1,284)
2007 - (1,969)

Partly because it's an excel sheet and is easier to keep up to date, but also they are in office 2007 format which means the old figures are probably even more up to date

Chart's a bit of a mess, neither have Microsoft ever been even close to 9 bill in debt.

Any others?

But thanks anyway Demotruk!!!

That's the one.... I PMed ninja a while back but he hasn't been online in a while to update it. That table is up to date as of last March (though for MS it's only up till June 2008)

Hmm, the GAF one is different.... it doesn't include 2000 and 2001 for Microsofts EDD for some reason, has different exchange rates (I would trust ninjas exchange rates more) and only goes back to 1998.... I am unsure about which is best for aligning the dates (MS FY ends in June, Sony and Nintendo in March)

I have trouble reading charts like this.

What does it mean when it says that years operating at a loss is 0 for Nintendo?

It means Nintendo have never lost money over a full fiscal year. (at least as far back as the 1980s when they joined the gaming industry)
I think someone mentioned once that they did have a small loss in 1 quarter of a fiscal year, but the other 3 quarters easily made up for it.

Thanks for repeating this.

I just played stupid to see if anyone would help me hammer this point home.

They lost money one quarter?  What the hell is wrong with them?
