Can't remember the exact quote from a Nintendo power interview but he explained that people liked Mario not because he is cute or because they can relate to him but because his games are good. When they see him they remember the fun they had playing the game.

Now that I think about that "Now you're playing with power..." slogan, they all came out before the 3D era kicked in. I'd say few of the best slogan ads to date!
Be it Nintendo, Super or even Portable Power, they ARE POWER!!!

Here in brazil nintendo used to use one that was something like this "IF IT NOT NINTENDO EVEN NOTHING IS BETTER" or "ITS NINTENDO OR NOTHING" ... its amazing ...
