lol Older games are just terrible by today's standard.
This list shows that Japanese people are very honest, unlike western old trolls who think old games are still good today.
Seriously, who can enjoy the super mario bros 1 today?
Recently I played some SNES games that were popular on virtual console and they were so boring compared to recent games. I also played some popular PS1 games and they were just terrible.
Most recent games are far better than old good games.
The fact you enjoyed old games IN THAT OLD ERA does not mean those games are as good as recent games.
And bayonetta and super mario bros wii, which got 40 of 40 in Famitsu, are not included in this list. JP gamers do not vote for games which got high scores but in fact are not so good.

this is just wrong.  You may not like older games, that doesn't mean anything.  I'm not being dishonest by sitting here and enjoying the hell out of older games.  Mario 1 is actually a really good game, that is why NSMB wii is selling so much, because NSMB wii is actually not much more advanced then that game.  Mario Galaxy is much more advanced, but it will not be enjoyed by nearly as many people.  Meanwhile Mario 1 keeps selling millions on virtual console.  I am currently playing shadow dancer, a really nice purchase.

No, he is right. Mario games on the VC sell based on nostalgia to the same people that grew playing Mario in the 80's and 90's because that's what was avaliable at that time. Try to convince anyone who started playing at the PS2 era to enjoy the first Marios. You simply can't because he will be able to perceive the many flaws nostalgia allow people to overlook.

I've studied about the subject god dammit so I really don't care a little if you disagree because I know that's true. The same goes for music and books.

Yeah, that's why nobody born after 1970 ever listened to the Beatles or Beethoveen.

And nobody alive today reads Shakespeare or The Tale of Genji or The Oddyssey or Huckleberry Finn.  All those boring old books have been lost to the sands of time and forgotten.

I have personally convinced people who started playing at the PS2 era to enjoy the first Marios.  It is a timeless classic that holds up because it's one of the best.  It's not going anywhere.  People will forget all the hot new games, but Mario 1/3/World/64 are here to stay.

Why no love for SMB2?.... :( *Throws a Birdo's egg towards RubangB*

Hogwash. There are people who have played Mario games without nostalgiac connections to the game mechanics or the level design and found them to still play fantastically. I am one of them.

But I'll invite you to a little exercise, if you care to?

Name some flaws in Super Mario Bros. Go ahead.

No towns?  No inns?

These kind of polls always skew massively to most recent game, film, book, etc. They're meaningless IMO.

The market view of the 'best of all time' is in fact transient in general.

It's only with long time critics, etc. that you'll generally see consistency. Although saying that surely once in a while the film critics could pick something other than Citizen Kane? But I digress...

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy XII
Dragon Quest IX
Final Fantasy XIII

They sure can't make up their mind. Until they do the 'best games ever' polls. Then you see nearly all Dragon Quest and Pokemon games in the top 20 with only one or two Final Fantasy games.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Dragon Quest games I can understand, but why Pokemon? Pokemon, as good as they are, aren't great games, certainly not better than most FF's like you suggest.

Your opinion of a Pokemon game aside, I was pointing out what tops Japanese polls like Famitsu time and again.  And the fact is, next to Dragon Quest, Pokemon is the next most popular game series in Japan.  And if you look closely, you'd see the similarities in Pokemon and Dragon Quest (battle engine, exploration, monster collection, etc).

weren't you saying yesterday

"Square-Enix forced Final Fantasy 13 onto Japanese gamers"

Odd how a game forced onto them through marketing blitz's can be 1st in such a list huh.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Aren't you also questioning the opinion of the people who made this poll and using your own opinion by measuring best with most popular? There are similarities between DQ and Pokemon games, but if a factual best games ever poll was ever made, without counting only popularity, do you seriously expect a pokemon game to be there? If so, then explain me why, given a recent launch of a Pokemon game in Japan, it doesn't even appear on this list?

Popularity =/= Better game

Can you link me another Famitsu "all time best" poll? The only one I found besides this is the 2006 one, and it puts 2 FF in the first two, and no Pokemon up till 51
