Forums - Sales Discussion - So...I Challenged Michael Pachter in an Email and it seems he responded

Wow! I'm reading.

@simulacrum

Please simulacrum, don't say "writted", it's "wrote"! "Do you agree with what he wrote?"!

The bonus round is a show on gametrailers BTW.

Since you're correcting grammar, I hope you don't mind me fixing yours, not completely, but mostly.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

You both made a lot of good points. The difference seems to be you are focusing on units and he is focusing on dollars.

The situation is not the consumers fault though. Third parties only have themselves to blame. Reap what you sow, and then complain that you don't sow as well as Nintendo.

I'm not correcting his grammar at all,  I was correcting him because the word "writted" doesn't even exist.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Pachter's post is more concise and to the point than your email, in my opinion. He's taking average price for 3rd party titles, and the split between 1st and third party into consideration directly. You don't really even imply that in your email.

The 3rd parties, and Pachter, are absolutely correct in that the Wii demographics are (a) radically different from stock game console demographics, and (b) not going to magically change their gaming preferences just because the 3rd parties change the kinds of games they make for the Wii.

The most successful 3rd party titles, and indeed the only kind of games worth making for 3rd parties, who lack the brandname recognition of Nintendo, are casual/party/fitness titles. No traditional game is going to ever smash those boundaries -- you can't change people just by making a new game for their system. The 3rd party market is there, but its limited. Most of the current 3rd party publishers are not prepared, or experienced, in making casual games -- and they should stay away from it for that reason.

Honestly the publishers who stand to make it big on the Wii are ones like BigFish, WildTangent, and the kinds of casual companies that make facebook and iPhone games (I forget the name of the FarmVille company.. Z-something). The Wii is their target audience. They should capitalize on it, because they are masters of the demographic already.

With regards to agreeing with him...well yeah what I wrote and what he wrote aren't inherently contradictory.

The focus is different. My focus was on the fact that third parties have over half the Wii market, which is a sizable amount of software. I had theorized it was about 2/3 of all software sold worldwide excluding Wii Sports (since its bundled), Pachter says its about 62% going by NPD in the USA.

Basically, I was saying since he had full data for Wii third parties he shouldn't go on the Bonus Round and make it sound like all third party games on Wii sell 150k or whatever. Dozens end up at a million units worldwide, which is a pretty healthy level.

Exactly, therefore Patcher is right, and the source is wrong.

I think Pachter is looking at it from a 3rd party profit-per-investment standpoint, whereas you are looking at it more from an overall perspective... which benefits Nintendo, due to the joys of licensing fees, but not the 3rd parties.

Apple, and its 3rd party iPhone publishers, are in much the same situation. Apple is making out like bandits with the iStore. The 3rd parties are not.

Curiously, the iPhone's touch interface also gives it a unique appeal to the casual market.  Very similar appeal to the Wii, I'd say, as well.

It does seem like a response to you, but I thought he actually e-mailed you back before, so it would seem strange for it to be a real "response". I wouldn't be surprised if you inspired the post on GAF though as he was thinking about it and he doesn't really think of it as a response.

@his post
I disagree with him saying Mario & Sonic is a 1st party game just because it has the word "Mario" in the title. Now, I don't have any evidence for this either way, but my guess is that Sega came up with the idea rather than Nintendo. They developed it, and they published it everywhere but Japan due to licensing agreements just to use Mario. (gotta give something up if you want to use Mario)

Anyways, I bet 100% that if Mario & Sonic flopped it would be considered 3rd party because it sold poorly. Very few people thought it would be lucky to break 1m let alone the 4m that Sega was predicting.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

good read

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Too bad the once that sell on the Wii are poorly reviewed (Just Dance is at 49% at Metacritics).
No more heroes 2 is currently at 89%, nearly a AAA title, and the first week sales are projected at 20k or something.
