Forums - Sony Discussion - IGN UK reviews MAG (7.6/10)

Played it today and I have to say I hope that people get better at it soon.

Whenever you get a commander who gives orders and a squad that follows them and plays OK, it's incredible fun. Whenever you don't it's just incredibly frustrating.

It's on 76 (metacritic) after the first day of the reviews! that is not good for a Sony exclusive that Zipper kept boosting about, even today they said MAG is not possible on the 360 (see CVG) due to the "powerz of the c3ll", why do they say silly things like that when the game is getting poor reviews on the first day!?!? shocking!

And also, as you know, Metacritic scores normally go down as more reviews get added, it hardly ever goes higher, 76 at the moment, that could easily drop into the 60's within a few days, not saying it will but it could.

Whether or not its possible or not on the Xbox 360 doesn't matter. However due to the network, more FPS players, more people with headsets with a desire to use them and the ability to form 8 player parties I would have rather had it on my Xbox 360. I enjoy this game concept but I won't buy this one, i'll wait for a proper Live implementation of something similar. If I have to wait until next generation then so it shall be.

what did timeshift do?

It did generic pretty well?

MAG, otoh, is NOT generic.  MAG has successfully brought the BF2 tactical FPS breed of shooter to consoles.  Just like Halo brought serious FPS online to consoles, and GoldenEye brought serious SP shooters to consoles.  Frankly, its better than BF2, to boot -- the teamwork works better.

Anyone who knocks it, would probably also say "What's BF2?" or maybe "BF2 was lame", as well.  That's a place no serious shooter fan would ever go, IMO.

The ironic thing is that BF:BC2 is knocking on the door pretty soon to say hello and that it wants the genre back.

BF:BC2 is not much different from BF:BC, and the console BF games aren't even close to the same type of game the PC BF games were.  Not by a longshot.  The closest thing on consoles is BF1943, and that'sa mere shadow of the kind of game BF2 was.  MAG is better than BF2.

7.5 lasting appeal for an online only game cant be good.

You said it, ... imo MAG isn't all that interesting anyway, it looks and plays like one of those generic year 2000 games.

Now if the right person reviews WKC: IE on IGN (Not one of those jrpg haters) watch how it gets somewhere around an' 8.5 to a 9 for lasting appealing, maybe a little higher.

Generic 2000 games? you mean like every FPS ever released since then?

no lol, i mean the actual year, i forget but there was alot of generic shooters on PC at the time.

And there has been tons of generic FPSs released since then. Halo, Resistance, Haze, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, MW2, etc. None of these have added ANYTHING to the genre. Shattered Horizon adds more innovate to the genre then all of these games combined.

Halo and MW2 are generic? If a game isn't adding something to the genre it's generic? Then Killzone 2 and 80% of the games are generic nowadays.

Actually Killzone 2 isn't as generic as one would think. Its the first FPS to properly add weight to a character so movement is more realistic.

COD has never added anything to the genre. When it first released the game was trash. Just a run of the mill FPS in its day. It had a hard time standing against the many legendary franchises released around its birth. COD is great at what it does, its still generic, I wont knock it for it being a fun game.

@BF comments. MAG definitely proves a good improvement for console FPSs that easily match BF2. But BF:BC2 is going to be on PC, where the BF franchise belongs. Its DICE's bread and butter of a platform. PC version > console version without any doubt.

Still BF3 is also in the works. HL2:Ep3 will eventually be released. Counter Strike's sequel. Portal 2. The next Unreal Tournament. These will all be the top tier of the genre. Top tier console FPSs cant touch PC's FPS top tier till we get full integration of ourselves into a game (virtual reality).

because they hire people who cant review a game for what it is.

M.A.G. is an online only game just like Warhawk. A game not for everyone. A steep learning curve. A score around 80% IMO is fair and reasonable

That's not why Killzone 2 isn't generic.

Killzone 2, Halo and MW2 aren't generic. They have something that the competition doesn't have, something that differs these games from the others and creates an indentity for COD, Halo and KZ2, that's all they need to not be generic. Halo has an unique atmosphere that really makes it different from everything in the market (the same goes for KZ2).

COD always added something to the genre: a lot of multiplayer features, some RPG elements that other FPSs are using now (XP/experience, equipment upgrades as you gain combat experience, class-based multiplayer, customizable classes etc etc etc), all the new modes for singleplayer and multiplayer (zombie mode, the new Spec Ops mode in MW2 etc). Seriously, the Call of Duty series brought a lot of enhancements for the multiplayer.

Please, don't tell me that a game is generic just because it's not adding something new to genre. This makes me sad.

Halo 3 did aight with mediocre graphics. This shall too..
