Forums - Gaming Discussion - I've been gaming like a fiend lately, last up, The Saboteur

Who has played this game? First off, it's bloody difficult. I like that part and for an open world game, the cheap death factor seems to be rather low. Some of the missions are nearly impossible, though... I ended up coming up with some very interesting methods of beating missions (my favorite being "that door is big enough to fit a car through"). What irritates me about this game is the massive amount of potential left wasted. The story could be fantastic and VERY out of the norm for a video game and the world's use of color is inspired, to say the least. Truly an excellent take on Nazi-occupied Paris. The world is pretty rich with life and the characters are mostly interesting (not a single American in the game thus far, YAY!).

Now on to the bad. Seriously, this game straight rips the mission structure from GTA (by far the worst part of that series) and the climbing and stealth components from Assassin's Creed (not a bad thing but the climbing is vastly inferior to AC). The game is a hodge-podge of other games and it shows through mostly uninspired gameplay. Even the disguises felt like they were taken directly from the early MoH games.

Overall, I think it's a decent game but after initially reading about this game two years ago, I was expecting a lot more out of it. I think it's one of the more interesting titles I've played in awhile but I end up walking away from the game wanting more. I want more Paris, I want varied mission structure, I want less GTA, and I want more character backstory. But climbing the Eiffel Tower in a Nazi SS uniform was pretty lulz-worthy.

Over the past week, I've gone through over half of The Saboteur, finally got around to beating ODST (holy shit, giant "meh", especially the ending), and Arkham Asylum. Huge thanks to whomever recommended Arkham to me a month back... Truly an awesome game and the best comic-based game I have ever played. The boss battles were Kojima-esque (until the end, when they became repetitive), the dialogue was funny and true to the characters ("We found the Joker's bomb, it was a hoax. The box was full of kittens and marzipan."), and the gameplay felt like a mix of God of War (minus the lame QTEs) and some of Nintendo's best franchises (several features of the game reminded me of TLoZ, a very good thing).

Anyway, just thought I'd ramble a bit about the games I've been blowing through in anticipation of getting my grubby mitts on Mass Effect 2 in the coming week.

no ME2 yet?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

ME2 just released today and Steam just enabled it like 30 minutes ago. Bit early for that.

The saboteur, it lacked a lot, but was still fun :) Can't believe you think it's bloody difficult though... Found it incredibly easy tbh

I play most games on a harder difficulty than default. Unfortunately, the game seemed to get easier right after I typed that post. I had just completed the train mission, which was a pain in the ass. I breezed through most of the rest of the game, especially the end portion. I just beat it a few minutes ago. Not a bad game and there's a lot to like about it. Honestly, I thought it was more interesting than GTA IV. The setting and characters definitely had it beat, IMO. Too bad the rest of the game was so formulaic.

In a few days, if not a week. I wanted to rent AC2 but it was still out. I'm not going to buy it. I will buy ME2, though.

I had a lot of games to catch up on and I still have a few to go but beating four games in a week is a little excessive, in my opinion. I think I'll go read a book or do something else for a bit.

Only the first 30 minutes when you get to Saarbrücken (which is veeeery close to my home town. Oh and the city certainly does not look like that in real life. Not even in the 1930s....)

The next day my 360 RROD'd :)

so... do you think is worth? i can buy it cheap but the reviews turn me down a bit... what can you say about it!

Dunno. If you like sandbox games, I'd say go for it. If you're iffy on them, rent it. It's worth a playthrough at the very least to see what they did right.

It's short for a sandbox game, though. Without doing many side missions (but taking about two hours to climb every monument I could find), I beat the game in roughly 10 hours, I think. I skipped A BUNCH of side stuff, though.
