Forums - Sony Discussion - Buying A UPS For PS3

so your saying that my 600 watts one is probably damaged right.

Without looking at, I would say yes.  It more than likely took one to many power surges from the power going out. A fluctating Hz rate can wreak havoc on electronics.   One good surge is all takes sometimes to take out a UPS (Better it than whatever equipment you have hooked up to it).

I would definitely look into one with a power cleaner on it due to your situation.

If i am correct the ps3 uses about 185 to 205 watts or more when playing a game so a 600w ups should hold for about 40 or less seconds. So that means once the ps3 kicks in on your current ups it really pulls out a lot of energy from it so my guess is you will need a ups thats stronger then 600w any one mind correcting me? i think i might be wrong?

I know the problem you are having and it is big a problem, because it's very possible you'd encounter the same problem even with a UPS that's just how the power supply in the PS3 is designed. It's very safe but the disadvantage is what you are experiencing it is VERY sensitive.

With the UPS, if it is the cheap ones that switches to battery power in loss of AC the same thing would happen as it may not switch in time to keep the PS3 on. (you would still get that delay.)

If it is a UPS that feeds the battery continuously and the battery feeds your devices you may have some more luck but depending on how much power the PS3 pulls you may get a small and temporary dip in voltage which may or may not cause the PS3's power supply safety features to kick in

I would look for the second type in my first post and see what happens

The watts he is speaking of is more than likely the mazimum load the UPS can handle, kind of a like a generator.  The size of the internal battery will determine how long it can power the devices hooked up to it.  The smaller the load, the longer the items connected will stay powered on.

If PS3 PSU is that sensitive then the only way would be to either buy Online UPS or maybe some kind of Line Interactive with AVR which is kinda pointless when you consider both of those are higher end UPSes and could cost as much as PS3 or more.

Also  if he gotten Online UPS I'm sure he wouldn't have problem since those machines give better voltage and frequency than you get from power grid :)

how about you switch your PS3 UPS with the X360 one to see if it really is faulty?

even better, since you don't use both at the same time... just use one UPS for the 2 consoles... it requiers bending over and switching plugs but it's much cheaper...

(though if you're in a contry where power cuts all the time and you also have money for PS3 X360 computers, tvs, inverts, 300 UPS.... I guess the price of the unit is irrelevant to your comfort...)

I am going to buy a new UPS for my PS3 because when I play Uncharted 2 my UPS (600watts) doesnt hold and when the power goes away my system turns off with it and last time it wouldn't turn back on (not even to stand by mode) for about 5 minutes. So can someone please tell me of how many watts should I get the new UPS so that it won't turn off because of the power. Thank you.

i really don't think you have anything to worry about, the only way you can mess up your ps3 is if you are in the middle of a firmware update and the power goes, then you have an instant brick.

Ok spike i completely understand your ps3 issue its because your convert sends energy in a form of time so it don't waste your inverters battery soon so some devices tend to have issues with it such has fan might make more noise. I think the issue with your ps3 is that when the inverter kicks in your ps3 and the power have a time delay so the ps3 turns of to protect itself i am no pro so i may be wrong. So i guess you may need a ups then. So if i am correct your 600w ups does last you so u can save your data?

Okay thins guy understand completly my situation yes fans do make louder noises.

1.he problem is that the UPS on the XBOX only works on the xbox. doesnt work on anything else no computer or PS3.

2. My PS3 and xbox are seperated and i have a brother so sometimes i use both at the same time.

3. True but im a kid and i have to ask my parents for stuff and they dont like spoiling me. They said there buying me one but they told me i had to find out which one would hold it so thats what im doing. And he doesnt ship thing from the US to my country.

P.S I bought my xbox and ps3 in the US so they cost me regular price.

I find it hard to belive that UPS which powers up the X360 doesn't work on anything else.

Can you please tell us the brand name and model of that UPS you use for X360 and that "600W" you tried with PS3 ?
