You make it sound like they had a choice. Gears 3 was pencilled in for 2010 the moment Gears 2 was for 2008, Halo Reach is the anomoly for 2010 here, not Gears 3.

Why would they release both the same year? Either because they're both ready or because something else is going to happen in 2011.

Also, you want to do a genuine megaton, there is definite reasoning to make 2010 hit huge, with Gears 3 and Halo: Reach BOTH being due out. Fable 3 is also this year to. Then Nintendo does need to hit with even more stuff come 2011.
