EA's goal is to beat MW2, says DICE

EA execs want Battlefield to overthrow Modern Warfare 2 as king of the online FPS, hints DICE.

Written by David Scammell, 25 January 2010

DICE's Patrick Bach has said that he believes "a lot of people on executive level" at EA see beating Modern Warfare "as a goal".

When asked by GamerZines last week as to whether DICE recognised Modern Warfare 2 as being the one to beat when it comes to online shooters, Bach replied:

"A lot of people ask us about Modern Warfare and they compare us to Modern Warfare, so when we answer questions about that it will sometimes sound like we are competing directly against them.

"I think a lot of people on executive levels see that as a goal, that we will beat Modern Warfare."

But Bach doesn't necessarily agree with that philosophy himself.

"To me it's not beating, it's showing that you can do things differently and to a high quality while delivering both a single-player and multiplayer game.

"Please go ahead and compare us but please don't see it as the same game because we're not trying to be that game. We're doing Battlefield things here, we're trying to do the game that we want to do."

Judging by our hands-on with the game, Bad Company 2 certainly has potential to give Modern Warfare 2 a run for its money, but how many of you are planning on switching to Battlefield come March?

You can take a look at our hands-on preview of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in Issue 35 of P3Zine, released this Thursday, if you still need convincing.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 launches in Europe on March 5th on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Is this POSSIBLE?

For those fo you who were in the beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 how does the online stack up to MW2?

It definetely won't beat it in sales, but could it beat MW 2 in quality?

I hate stories like this. Makes the entire industry sound retarded.

Just make a fucking good game...and if its really good, it will have a chance of overthrowing other leading games. Simple as that. Wishing it becomes the FPS king won';t make it happen.

If you saw the VGA's, you'll know that is actually the reality

I think EA needs something now, the company went from a money whore tfocussing more on making very good games & look where that got them!

Like they have nothing to gain form this statement, and everythign to lose.

COD:MW1 was so great cause it came out of nowhere. No one at IW was saying tha tthey will try to be the Halo killer at the time. The game came out and was something no one expected.

Dice is just putting themselves in a fight which they most likely won't win...

Don't worry, they will make a 'fucking good game'. But thats not enough, they have to make people go 'wow' and enough people to put down their controller from playing COD xxx and buy the game. To beat COD, you'd have to be better than COD and lucky at the same time. They'd need 3-4M sales per HD platform to have a launchpad for a series which is strong enough to take on COD.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

Its pretty evident from the path Battlefiend has gone that they're trying to take on games like Modern Warfare and Halo. Which I don't see why they are doing so. They had developed quite a good reputation as being one of the best online games out there, yet now they're trying to turn their game into a 'Single Player with multiplayer' game. And I feel a lot of people are going to be turned off by that, as most people who played Battlefield 1942-Battlefield 2 played it primarily BECAUSE it was a multiplayer only game.

I could be wrong and this move to incorporate a single player campaign could just add to their sales. But especially for me and all my friends who played Battlefield 1942/Desert Storm/Vietnam/Battlefield 2 religiously, we don't really have any interest in these newer games. Personally, they look like a blatant attempt to be like Modern Warfare, just using the existing Battlefield gameplay. And in the end, I fear the single player will just end up feeling like 'Multiplayer lite' or 'String of planned events and cinematics with a few gameplay objectives'. And this is the exact opposite of what made Battlefield unique and fun....the ability to go anywhere on the map and do anything to win in an environment of up to 64 people.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I like how the box art is extremely similar t o the modern warfare box art.

KZ2 already beats MW2 in quality, so I wouldn´t be surprised If BFBC2 is also better.

Well, I about MW1 and disliked it. I have always like BF games. I am buying BF:BC2 for PC.

There are a large group of those like me who feel BF >>>>>>>>>>>>>> COD. So that should help. Only issue is, COD has a deeper history with console gamers, whereas BF has been traditionally a great PC game.

It will be interesting and I think it will come down to the buzz EA creates. That long trailer/preview the other night with Gttv was great. More like that will be needed and a lot of commercials really nailing the feature differences.

it would make more sense if they tried to tackle MW with Medal of Honor. I don't really "buy it", because Battlefield isn't really like COD, I still think it's great to own both.

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!
