Nope, Aliens (plural) is the sequel to Alien (singular).

Damn blue people. Breaking all of OUR records! Who do they think they are?
Sexy, though. I'd hit it.

Okay my bad, but it still holds up :P I think >_< |
Sorry, yes you're right, Ridley Scott did the first one. Great movie too, BTW.

i like this! lol
Glad to see Titanic toppled, I really wasn't that impressed. Avatar isn't my idea of the best film ever - too cliched for that - but it's fun, well made and solid throughout and certainly better than Titanic.
I will say though, for those arguing that inflation has nothing to do with what made the most revenue, you don't seem to understand money too well.
I point you to Dr Evil's famous '1 Million Dollars'
The point is Avatars revenue cannot be directly compared to any previous figures beyond a certain point in time due to changing economic factors. Therefore, if you want to say 'Of all Time' you have to adjust all the numbers to an even playing field.
The truth is, due to inflation, most of the time we should use the phrase 'of recent years' to define a window of time where comparison's make sense.
Anywho, I'm also glad Transformers 2 wasn't the top film of 2009, that would really have depressed me.
Now, with Pandora established, I want some narrative risks and originality next time around.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

You are both right, the first one (Alien) was directed by Ridley Scott, but I was talking about the second one, directed by Cameron, Aliens. Either way, the Alien series jumped the shark when Alien 3 came out, it has been bad since.
Human contact, the final frontier.

Actually, I know of several people who have become increasingly annoyed by these records being broken because movie when it can mostly be attributed to movie theaters charging $15 for a movie. If you want something that is not as easily manipulated you should look at total ticket sales, which (in all reality) no movie will ever beat Gone with the Wind. |
there wasn't widespread piracy back then or DVD's being released around 4 months after the launch of a movie
do you know its estimated Transformers 2 could have added around 200 Million more to its gross from the piracy it saw in the first few months let alone after that?
Avatar has broken piracy records too
When Gone With The Wind released people had nothing better to do than go & see it 30 times a week ROFL ROFL ROFL!!!
Now there is so much compeition within entertainment mediums
CONGRATS AVATAR!
& CONGRATS TITANIC FOR HAVING THE RECORD FOR 12 YEARS!
Finally
CONGRATS JAMES CAMERON
All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

You're right, that dreadful Aliens Ressurection still has me thinking on how a great sci-fi horror saga can go down the drain so much >_< They almost pulled a Star Wars.

Titanic is the highest grossing move of all time worldwide. Someone posted the numbers in another thread not so long ago. Gone with the wind is 2nd highest.
Avatar will get close though. Maybe $2,400,000,000 worlwide when all is said and done (Titanic's worldwide gross revenue is $2,900,000,000 adjusted for inflation. And as a reference, LOTR The Return of the King is $1,350,000,000).
Why the hate towards Titanic BTW? I haven't seen Avatar yet but I have a strong feeling it is just as clichéd and melodramatic as Titanic.
