Forums - Sales Discussion - Battle of Jan 26..Mass Effect 2>MAG?

I think it is pretty obvious Mass Effect 2 will have higher ratings, sell more, and be a lot more polished than M.A.G. That's not to say M.A.G. will not be good, it will be a solid game. However, ME2 has a lot more advantages with it being a sequel, bigger userbase, etc.

MAG plays more like a PC FPS TBH, is a deeper game that caters to a more mature audience.

Plays slower and more strategic, not everyone likes MAG, but it fully succeeds at being the type of game it aims to be. Its audience is not as big as say a pop arcade FPS like MW2, but I think it will do pretty well.

ME1 was awesome, ME2 looks top be more awesome... ME2 will probably outsell MAG by quite a bit. Just because of budget and name and its a Bioware game.... and it promises to be pretty kick ass as well.

Well on Amazon Mass Effect 2 is #2 while MAG is #40. These positions have been similar each time I check.

Seems for whatever reason MAG did not get the hype Mass Efect 2 did...is it the graphics? This is even weirder since MAG is in the more popular genre (FPS).

Could this also give X360 a hardware sales boost or do you think it will not have much effect?

Can MS continue to deliver the more hyped titles in the first half of 2010 (Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2) ,or will God of War 3 put a stop to this? Can this lead to 360 taking the USA hardware lead by a small amount on PS3 in the first half of 2010?

thats amazons list though. if i recall someone posted the pre-order numbers of these games and mag was like 100,000 behind Mass (havent check again though). Second i think amazon had the worst pre-order encentive therefor people pre-ordered else where like myself and friends. i rather have the second best armor than a home space ill never use. ign, playstationlifestyle, etc. are doing a good job hyping MAG and Sony jsut release a commercial for it (effing awesome commercial).

Actually Mass Effect is at both #2 AND #5 (Collector's). So that's even more.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

After you put some time into it, MAG makes other console FPS multiplayer modes look kinda... dated. I think it'll take a while to get off the ground, but it's legs will probably be abnormally long.

That said, RPGs usually sell some huge portion of their LTD during their first couple weeks, or even first week.  They have a horribly long used lifespan at used game retailers -- which kills their legs in a major way.  MAG is the opposite.  I doubt finding used copies will be even close to as easy.

If MAG wasn't a new IP, I'd say that it'd probably come out on top, if we revisited this topic, on Jan 26th, 2011.  Jan 26th, 2010, seems like no contest for Mass Effect 2, though.

MAG is awesome for it's audience, and I could careless that's it's not 10 million people big, give me 50k people who actually know how to play and I'm the happiest gamer in the world.

That only applies to Japanese RPGs.

If you look at western RPGs, they are the antithesis of frontloaded.

  • Oblivion - 7.3x multiplier (assumes about 50% of NA sales in PAL which weren't tracked at the time)
  • Fallout 3 - 4.5x multiplier (and still selling ~15k copies a week)
  • Sacred 2 - 6.0x multiplier
  • Two Worlds - 3.9x multiplier (worst legs of any RPG, and rightfully so with such low scores)
  • Dragon Age - 4.6x multiplier (and still selling)
  • Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 - 2.6x multiplier (again, bad but still going to go up)
  • Fable 2 - 3.2x multiplier (after a 1m opening)
  • Mass Effect - 5.4x multiplier

RPGs on the 360 are quite long-lived. Even Fable 2 managed a fantastic multiplier and continues to sell even today. I would venture to say that Mass Effect 2 should sell similarly to Fable 2, if not a little better.

IMO, Mass Effect will sell between 3-4 million copies.

MAG will sell ~2 million copies.

I don't think they'll be close. MAG will be a good game, and should get decent sales, but to argue that it'll be close is not understanding how good Mass Effect was.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

idk prolly cause me2 is a succcessful ip mag is new

Long Live SHIO!

MAG won't win the sales battle against ME2... but it'll still beat No More Heroes 2, so that's something, right? Poor Suda51, just can't sell any games that garner more than cult status.

i think the sales of MAG may be more disappointing than most believe.
I can see it crashing and burning sales wise tbh.

I hope it doesn't, but non one i know is hyped for this game.
