Forums - Gaming Discussion - MARS seeming still in Development (PS3/PC)

Remember when we first heard of this game all those months ago? Remember how 2001 PC it looked? Well the game seems to be coming along just fine. I have been keeping tabs on the Main site (http://mars.spiders-games.com/) and they have added a few bits for those interested.

I would post some of these new pics but The site is flash based and I do not know a way to capture it to post on this site :/. Here is a link to the gallery

Thank You SCRAWLfx.com :)

Before....

This is what Mars Looks like Now...

I was mainly reminded of this while speaking of PS3 and its complete omission of exclusive WRPGs. The details of this game are not completely fleshed out yet(for the designers as well) because this game lacks a publisher at the moment. Hopefully Sony picks it up because I think this could turn out rather well. There were many rumors saying this game was PS3/360/PC but Destructoid answered that with this....

Contrary to reports, Spider Games is not developing an Xbox 360 version of PC and PlayStation 3 RPG Mars. In an e-mail conversation with Destructoid, Spider CEO Jehanne Rousseau said an Xbox 360 version of the game was a logical step and is being planned, however, taking the game to the Microsoft platform would require help from a publisher.

“For now we're still searching for a publisher, so in one way the 360 version relies on them,” Rousseau said. “But we do actually have a PC version and we're planning to develop for 360 as well, as it seems very logical. I'll be able to give you the final answer about the different platforms when I have the contract in hand."

In a recent interview, Rosseau indicated that the lead platform for Mars was the PlayStation 3. In his words, the choice was made because “the PS3 is a very complicated platform.” Spider would rather jump whatever hurdles now, as opposed to later. Good call. Run a mile, then take a walk.

Although this could be completely contradicted by this....

http://mars.spiders-games.com/news/509

This is XBOX magazines doing previews of the game. Yet SPIDER has stayed firm on the idea they are trying to stick with PS3 and PC first and foremost.

This is all besides the point though. The game looks to have promise.

Here is some info....

Mars is a Sci-fi RPG action game that innovatively merges character development and light and rythmic fights.

It takes you on a journey deep into an original futuristic universe and presents you with scenarios dealing with difference, racism and environment.
"In the destroyed world of Mars, two destinies mingle together. Two beings searching for their identity travel across a broken planet, constantly facing bloody political conflicts which tear the old colonies apart. Often divided, sometimes fighting the same enemies, both are the source of the advent of a new era… "

Im also pretty sure this game is running off Sony's PhyreEngine, which supposedly makes PC-PS3 porting a breeze. Apparently a few popular games use it such as DiRT, GripShift,Grid, Ateleria Rorona,Shatter,Flower, Flow, Critter Crunch. Engine can be seen here...

EDIT: Wiki confirms it-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhyreEngine

very ,very, VERY early version of the game can be seen here....

There is a newer video on the main site but I cannot extract it.

So they're sticking with the PC/PS3 first and foremost but they're planning to make it for the 360?

“One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong. Can you tell me which thing is not like the other by the time I finish my song?”

possibly. What really matters is the PS3 version is coming first and it will surround PS3's architecture. This means PS3 version won't be gimped in any way if they do decide to make a 360 Port.

Introduction

Mars aims to renew the RPG gaming experience with more intuitive, faster and more gratifying action phases, while at the same time keeping the specific main features of the genre. The idea is to blend two genres, Beat’em all Action and RPG, combining character progression, immersion, equipment collection, additional quests and a solid storyline with rhythmic combat sequences, a sense of power from the beginning of the game and of course QTE and bosses with sequential behaviour.
This combination leads to a true innovative gameplay supported by many other key features : you can choose between two characters whose different stories intertwine and whose skills vary.
The game’s environment has been designed to be an asset in itself, or an important part of the gameplay, with lighting effects which create unprecedented combat situations.
The world created for Mars has been designed to offer a true voyage in the heart of a totally new universe mingling decadent futuristic technology and precarious survival on a planet with highly extreme conditions.
The storyline leads you to discover your own identity in a web of political intrigue and complex conflicts between forces, allowing you to better understand the world you are travelling. Many scripted sequences give rise to the action and storyline, creating unforgettable moments.

Combat

The combat phases are dynamic and spectacular no matter your level of implication during the quests.
Most confrontations are brief : you move from one enemy to the other striking or throwing spells one after the
other. Combat against the bosses or champions lasts longer though, as you must use different tactics to beat them.
As you can also modify your environment by breaking part of a roof or moving metal plates to use light as a weapon, the fights gain a more strategic dimension.
Playing the role of Pandora is as intense as playing Seth. To make her cast her most powerful spells a precise timing is required as well as constant movement to avoid being interrupted. Even though she is less powerful she is more agile, and just like the warrior needs his weapons, she is nothing without her gauntlets which allow her to canalize her fluid.
All enemies, if wounded enough, can be finished off in a spectacular way.

Two characters : two stories and two forms of gameplay

Mars allows you to choose between two characters with different skills and
Abilities : Seth, is an elite soldier and highly skilled fighter who tends to act brutally even if athletically. As he progresses in the game he can learn many special attacks and how to master new weapons.
Pandora on the other hand is a technomancer who handles fluids with catalyst gauntlets to produce devastating magic. But more than just using different skills, playing each character results in a different control and gameplay. Their story varies a lot even though it follows a similar course, allowing you to discover two versions of Mars.

Light effects

On Mars sunlight is deadly, which means you can use it during combat to beat your enemies. Seth and Pandora can make gaps in rooftops of different buildings they are fighting on to expose their opponents to sunrays, use mirrors to reflect light on them or push them away from the protection of shady paths.
You can modify the architecture of the environment during combat while making sure your character is not exposed to sunrays and watch out for shadows moving position around the sun’s movement. The impact the sun has on the gameplay provides a new feature not only during combat but during the entire game itself.

A new world

The Mars universe is unprecedented, not at all like normal mythological or fantasy worlds, offering a journey in a credible futuristic world where survival and the ability to adapt are keys to be able to withstand a hostile, desperate and decadent environment. The game’s story, complex political system and religion, as well as its many creatures and different inhabitants lead you through an unforgettable journey in an "extraterrestrial" world.

Looks solid but a good engine is nothing without a good game using it (*cough* Cryengine. *cough*).

the phyre engine is epic, from the tech demo its lighting was amazing, this game shows some heavy potential, thx for the post forever cloud.

lol low blow to crysis fans man haha

But that is very true. They seem to be progressing pretty well. Did you see the difference between the early stuff and the up to date screens? Actually watch the video of the alpha game demo, then go to the site link and watch the more recent one they showed at Gamecom. It looks to have Fallout 3/Mass Effect/Oblivion appeal.

Yea it really does and its pedegree is pretty good as well with games such as Grid(Which looked really greate) and flower using it. The engine is said to be very open and can be combined with different Engings such as the UE and physics engines to make it even better.

Im thinking The PE is the main reason this game is utilizing this Light source mechanic within the game. Supposedly(Well not really you can tell by the Engine Demo) it handles lighting exceptionaly well.
