ok... let me drop it back a step... has anyone BEATEN Tetris.. and i mean the GB version.... not the gbasp or the ww.. the gb version?

If you're talking about beating it on the fastest speed with the blocks starting as high as they can, yeah.  I beat it tons of times.  So did my mom, aunt, cousins, and step brother.

Well, how about not on level 9, height 5, but height 5 on level heart-9? (Hold the down arrow at the title screen, for those who've forgotten how.)

As for "beating" it, nope, can't be done. I've not even made it to the level where Nintendo says that it stops speeding up. (Level 22, for those who are curious.) On the NES, I can get about 192 lines on a good day, and on the GB, I've hit 213. But damned if I don't think I can still improve! (I REALLY want to break 200 on the NES...)

You're talking about the "heart levels".  Nope!  I tried that once.  It was pretty much: Press start.  Game over.

They're not that bad; the heart is basically +10 levels, just like holding A on the NES. (The NES is also where I've tried higher than 9-5, I've cleared height 5 on level 11 there.) I like the split-second decision that the heart levels make you do... even if my game still does end sooner! (Though if I'm playing a straight A-type game, I always start on level 9.)

Yeah.  It's been a really long time and the Gameboy version didn't offer any way to save data.  I remember reading an issue of Nintendo Power and seeing an unknown guy named Steve Wozniak (sic) in the letters section.  He had a high score of 500,000 plus that he earned while riding in an airplane.  They replied that "he will always have one of the highest scores".  At that moment, I decided I was going to beat Steve's score.  I came close.  And by close, I mean not close at all.  I think I had about 300,000+ points.  I'd start on A-type on level 9 because you'd get more points for your combos.  It'd always get to level 20 something and I wouldn't even be able to move a piece to the left or right before it locked into place.

The new versions on the DS and PSP (and Xbox 360) are much easier.  On the DS and PSP, I've "beaten" marathon mode.  I hate it.  Tetris is supposed to go on forever until you die.  In the newer ones, after scoring a certain number of lines, the game just stops.  If Tetris (nes) is out for the virtual console, I may download it.  I relish the old school challenge!

Well how about the arcade Grandmaster Tetris games? Those look pretty crazy.

For example, this one starts out "relatively slow" and then speeds up about halfway through. (you can see the guys hands in this one)

Or this one, no hands, but still pretty cool to watch:

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

Skeeuk: "playstation 3 is the ultimate in gaming acceleration"

^^^Unreal!!

I played Tetris online once and only once. It was on Xbox Live vs. some guy from Japan. He pretty much did that to me. I don't even think I got a Double. I turned that game off and never looked back.

It's sad when you do something to the best of your ability for twenty years and somebody like that guy in the video shows you that you aren't even good at it!

Yeah, insane stuff! Even the "slow" part is still super fast, haha.

As for the gameboy version, I did see this video on youtube (kind of long at 32min, but...)

^^^I recall Tetris being faster than that on the Gameboy. Is that a tool assisted video? Even the newer versions go faster.

Yes I understand you want the real answer. Ok :

The Tetrions

There are many theories as to the origin of the Tetrions. The simple truth is that the Tetrions are the only evidence of a long since forgotten space-faring species. Tetrions are Gateways to planets orbiting distant stars. They can only be opened by an intelligent species because it works only for those who unlock the secrets of the falling Blocks. We have called the gate opening activity Tetris. And while it is the key to connecting us to distant worlds, Tetris has been found to be very addictive by all intelligent species.

[edit]The Minos

The Minos are a species found on the planet called Hadar 4. They are a robust mechanical species. It is possible that they were first built by organics, as is the case with most mechanics. Minos are intelligent and have just unlocked the secrets of the Tetrions. They now know that manipulating the Blocks in a certain way will turn a Tetrion into an interstellar transportation device. The Tetrions will soon turn out to be the key to the survival of the Minos.

[edit]The Mission

The mission is to evacuate the Minos on Hadar 4 to six other planets that have been identified as suitable for terraforming. Mino scientists have discovered that their star (Hadar) has become unstable and as a result the surface of Hadar 4 will reach 5000 kelvins, which is well past the maximum operating temperature of the Minos. The best Mino Tetris players have been identified as the gate openers. Six Tetrinauts will be sent to the planets to open the Tetrion gates from the other side to facilitate the exodus.

Its maybe not quite what you looking for but maybe this story is based on the original idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_Worlds

Re-watched a few minutes of the video. I guess it's real. I forgot that there are some new rules to Tetris (like infinite spin and such) that make the newer versions easier. I need to try and find my Gameboy, now. It's at my mom's house, somewhere. I'm feeling inspired........

The description says that it's being played on a Super Gameboy (on a SNES).

It probably seems slower after watching those Tetris Grandmaster videos.

That story sucks.
