They're not that bad; the heart is basically +10 levels, just like holding A on the NES. (The NES is also where I've tried higher than 9-5, I've cleared height 5 on level 11 there.) I like the split-second decision that the heart levels make you do... even if my game still does end sooner! (Though if I'm playing a straight A-type game, I always start on level 9.) |
Yeah. It's been a really long time and the Gameboy version didn't offer any way to save data. I remember reading an issue of Nintendo Power and seeing an unknown guy named Steve Wozniak (sic) in the letters section. He had a high score of 500,000 plus that he earned while riding in an airplane. They replied that "he will always have one of the highest scores". At that moment, I decided I was going to beat Steve's score. I came close. And by close, I mean not close at all. I think I had about 300,000+ points. I'd start on A-type on level 9 because you'd get more points for your combos. It'd always get to level 20 something and I wouldn't even be able to move a piece to the left or right before it locked into place.
The new versions on the DS and PSP (and Xbox 360) are much easier. On the DS and PSP, I've "beaten" marathon mode. I hate it. Tetris is supposed to go on forever until you die. In the newer ones, after scoring a certain number of lines, the game just stops. If Tetris (nes) is out for the virtual console, I may download it. I relish the old school challenge!
