I still think Nintendo would like to tap into that other 50% of the market. As long as they're not getting Batman: Arkham Asylum, GTAIV, Bioware, Square, and Bethesda rpgs; and key games from Ubi and other 3rd parties they probably won't be able to.

Meanwhile as long as Wii can't put out graphics in games like Epic Mickey or Metroid: Other M like what you can get in PS3 and 360 exclusives, then fans of FFXIII, Uncharted and Gears don't really have any incentive to become Wii fans.

No. Nintendo would like TO MAKE MONEY. They've already tried to court the hardcore market several times, and the market responds with a slap to the face, every time. So, Nintendo has decided to go in a new direction and bring THEIR hardcore fans along with them. That strategy has been successful beyond belief. Time to just accept that and move on.

*looks at the billions Nintendo's made with their 50%*

*looks at the billions Sony's, MS and 3rd parties have lost on their 50%*

Yeah, I gotta go with Sempuukyaku.  Nintendo's good where they are.

Lol, +1 for epic win. XD

Maybe, but if you prefer certain types of games, then they're not exactly good for you.  Especially when certain games that are rated as high as anything on the system continually get worse sales than any comparable games on the other systems and lower rated games on the Wii while at the same time the other systems are bringing out more games to try to capture the casual marketshare as a result of the Wii's success.

I honestly believe that the Wii would get versions of certain award winning third party games if the Wii wasn't so unperpowered compared to the other systems and if the Wii's primary marketplace wasn't made up of people that would rather play Wii Sports than Okami or No More Heroes.  The Gamecube and N64 both received better third party support than the Wii has received.  And over 50% of the people thay buy games prefer the 360 and PS3 offerings over that of the Wii.

This again? sigh...

3rd parties just give excuses to not work on the Wii. If they were concern about it not being as powerful as the 360 and PS3, why do they put big name games on the DS and PSP? If they were concern about low software sales, why do they continue to support the PSP? And please stop with the stereotyping of the Wii consumer-base. It stopped being funny in 2008.

What if No More Heroes 2 gets higher reviews than any Wii series games on the Wii and only sells 500,000 copies compared to their10 to 20 million or more.  Doesn't that tell you that the Wii's primary audience prefers Wii series games to No More Heroes?

What you say is true.   But Nintendo is a business and they are in business to make money.   Which is exactly what they are doing.

If the Wii had been launched as a HD system it would get multiplatform games like AC2 and MW2 BUT it would also have launched at $800 (because Nintendo never sells consoles at a loss - they can't afford too) and that would have killed it immediately.

Nintendo would be very happy to have those games on it's system, sure.  But Nintendo themselves aren't going to cater to that market, it's a money lossing proposition.

Besides, what casual games are Sony and MS coming out with?   Nothing that's in the slightest way threatening's Wii's hold of the expanded market.    Natal might make some difference.  IF Rare comes out with the next Wii Sports.   But as far Rare has come out with Banjo-Kazooie and Viva Pinata which, while excellent games, failed to capture the casual consumer in any way.

LOL @ the Innervate's post. It's possible. :) Pachter has burned both the PS3 and the 360 with his price cut rumours. He might as well take a shot at the Wii. :)

Nintendo *might* be working on an HD version, but I don't think they need it. The only way they'd release something like that is if it looked like the PS3 was going to overtake the Wii. I don't see that happening in 2010.

That, and people don't buy the Wii for the graphics. My girlfriend plays Wii fit and Mario Kart Wii and she's happy. She doesn't know if it's 720p, and she doesn't care. I'll play those games with her, but she bought me a Wii Star Wars game, and I couldn't stand it. I'll play the fun/happy games on the Wii, but having HD isn't going to make me play shooters on it - I already have a console for that, as does everyone else who is interested in the that type of game.

Nintendo's been successful this gen by having a target audience and serving it well. Trying to be everything to everyone wouldn't be a good way for them to go.

But would you really like to see Kingdom Hearts 3 or Final Fantasy XIII on Wii with inferior graphics to the way you thought it would look when everybody thought this gen would be another win for Sony and their advanced tech?  Wouldn't you like to see Epic Mickey come very close to looking like its concept art and a Pixar cartoon?  Or Metroid:  Other M have graphics as good as Gears or Uncharted 2 or Metal Gear Solid?

Trying to be everything to everyone worked well for the SNES, PS2, and DS.

"Michael Pachter’s predicted for the MILIONTH time that Wii HD will be coming this year, as is a motion sensor-based DS."

Yeah, right... This guy has always had my confidence. Ok, finances analists may have some credibility, but gaming analists are just a bunch of crap trying to hype on something.

Well....

Nintendo is what, a $40 billion dollar company now? They have a higher market cap than Sony, at $34 billion. I think we need to put aside the perception that Nintendo is a small time company. They are a big, powerful corporation that COULD launch their systems at a loss if they wanted to.

It's just that they do not see it financially feasible to do so. Their focus is on profits, not market share. And that's a focus that I completely agree with 100%.

So, should I hold off on getting a Wii and wait for this? I'm waiting anyway since I will only buy it when they bring the Black Wii to NA.

Look, I'll make this clear for anybody who still believes Nintendo will release an HD Wii:

- IF Nintendo make an HD Wii, 3rd party developers can make HD games for it, no? However, those games would still be considered far inferior by fanboys and developers alike, because while it then may be in HD, Wii is still underpowered compared to PS360. A glorified HD GameCube, of sorts. (Of course Wii is more powerful than GC, but you get the point.) So games with inferior graphics, in HD. Core HD games will still not be ported from PS360 to Wii HD. it would be like porting PS2 games to N64.

- ALSO, releasing an HD Wii would effectively reduce the console's installed base from close to 70 million to zero. WHY would 3rd parties put big-effort, big-budget games on a console like that? They won't.

- Wii is the BEST SELLING console of this gen, the fastest selling videogame machine ever, and on track to be the best selling in history, ever. Nintendo's making the largest profits in their entire 120+ years of history, totally crushing both MS and Sony, and is actually one of the most successful and profitable companies on this planet, having completely altered an entire industry, with their competitors falling over themselves to get a piece of Nintendo's scraps. Ever since DS launched, Nintendo's story has been an insane rollercoaster-ride of profits and success. WHY would they spend millions, maybe billions, creating, launching and supporting an upgraded machine, when it's not necessary. In fact, the only ones screaming off rooftops that Nintendo NEEDS an HD Wii, are their competitor's fanboys and biased 'professionals' that would love nothing more than to see Nintendo fail.

- Finally, an HD Wii would effectively alienate the current installed base of the Wii. It would've been the same if Nintendo had released DSi with PSP-like horsepower, instead of keeping it down. Sure, they COULD have. But they didn't. And they won't.

And please, if there are any trolls reading this, don't bother coming up with some whining replies. Pachter's comments make no sense.
