Forums - Sony Discussion - SONY: Motion Device will become PS3's "DE FACTO" Controller - YAY or nay?!

"Do you want this to become PS3's de facto controller, or do you prefer Dualshock 3?"

Darth, how are we supposed to know which we will prefer considering the wand isn't out yet? Some obviously dislike motion controls, which is fine, but maybe some of you should try this device before writing it off. I for one hope that the delay till autumn will help them secure more titles upon launch so they don't encounter another ps3 launch scenario (expensive hardware and no worthwhile software causing consumer apathy and the scorn of media outlets). If they launched in Winter-Spring this year, that would assuredly be the case.

Getting people to adopt a new controller mid generation will be a tough hurdle for Sony, even with quality software. Delivering on some of the ideas left on the table by third parties under utilizing the Wii may prove to be beneficial.

So odd wii mote thing wins ?

This "de facto" crap only hints they will launch a special PS3 bundled with the whole PS-eye-wand combo (with no DS3 controller) and who knows, probably they will call it a different name? ie. PlayStation 3 Waggle (lol jk, :P ). Think of it as sort of a PS3 new sku but at the same time kind of a re-launch too. They would certainly pack this bundle with some kind of casual games collection ala Wii Sports, and price it $250 or lower. That's my guess. Do I care? of course not, I think highly of myself as a serious gamer.

That's ridiculous. No way in hell it becomes the standard PS3 controller.

price, price, price, it's all about price and one decent software, PS3 sports, epic win.

Sorry, but I don't think the wands will become a defacto, even if that's what Sony wants. In order for them to take off, they would need to bundle them with all systems, AND not include the DualShock3. Even if they include both, the thing that developers will see is that only 1 device, the DS3, is owned by almost (because of Sixaxis, but the main input is the same) 100% of system owners. Of course, dropping the DS3 from systems would be an incredibly bad move, as it would make no older games playable out of the box.

So, no, it's just not going to happen.

without an actual quote, this could be taken completely out of context.

They could have meant, "the de facto' motion controller".

I get the feeling CVG aren't telling the whole story. According to Eurogamer:

The plan is for the new peripheral to become the de facto controller for PS3 "along with" the Dual Shock pad.

{phew}

but does "along with" mean the dualshock pad in one hand & the arc in the other? (like the proposed control scheme at TGS that looked like the worst thing ever)

or are they two seperate entities?

Probably means all games after release _must_ be compatible with the motion controller as well as the DS3. Basically I think it means the buttons will obviously work just like the DS3 and SONY will _push_ the developers to include motion input (as well as standard input).

Personally I don't have a problem with this. If I can use standard input most of the time and motion control only when I feel it adds to the experience then this is a great idea.

just the phrase "de facto" has a lot of different interpretations as well.

de facto can also mean "unofficial"...

without a quote, this article is bogus.

I don't actually see a Sony quote stating what's in the headline. I just see another article, which claims its so, again without a link to prove it.

I smell BS.
