Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Pre-ordered Mass Effect 2...never played ME1...am I screwed?

After seeing that gameplay is a bit more acton savy in ME2, and not having anything to play until AvP comes out, I decided to take the plunge and pay for Mass Effect 2 preorder.

I played part 1 for an hour...and pretty much don't know anything about the story or gameplay that the series established with part 1.

What should I do? Will enjoy part 2 as is? Should I cancel preorder? Try and play part 1?

Please advise!

You'll enjoy ME 2, but you would enjoy it more if you played the first one

Is there anyway that you could play the first one before the 2nd one?

You really should play ME1 first as it will affect what happens in ME2.

You'll certainly enjoy the 2nd game, but I would very strongly recommend playing the first. There are loads of decisions that effect the second one and of course, you already have a bond with your character and so a stronger investement in keeping him alive

Anyway, don't cancel it. Play it through once, and if you love it, then buy or rent the first one and play it through properly

Thanks Justin. That helps story wise...

Plot-wise, you'll probably be fine, as it's not exactly complex stuff.

It does sound like the sequel is trying hard to build on the choices you made in the original though, so that's likely to have an effect.

Why not try reading a summary of the plot, downloading a completed save copy, and reading up on what choices the downloader made? Optimally, you'd play through the first one in its entirety first, but you don't seem particularly happy with that, so...

In an interview on Game Trailers, the devs said that it is a complete stand alone game; you do not NEED to play the first...uh....first.

Haha. However for those of us who did, we have the benefit of decisions we made in the first, playing out in the second.

BTW, it's available ON DEMAND on Live...though it looks like you don't have the time anyway, nm!

Yeah...looks like Mass Effect 2 is a go. I'm sure it will kick ass.

After playing the crappy demo, I took my Dantes Inferno preorder and transfered the $$$ to Mass Effect 2. So essentially EA is getting my money either way lol.
