According to Sony Chief Executive Sir Howard Stringer, sales of the PlayStation 3 have seen a nice up-tick since the company introduced a cheaper 40GB model. In Europe, over the past three weeks, the PS3 has been the number one selling console, with the PS2 being No. 2. He said the console is now selling three times as fast, and twice as fast in the U.S.

Stringer noted that "if the momentum continues," Sony will certainly hit its target of selling 10 million PS3s worldwide by the end of its fiscal year. "We are coming back up again," he said.

Any thoughts? Is he qouting Media Create? Or is it marketing BS?

The momentum already slowed. He's quoting the past, and trying to create some hope for Sony investors. The fact is that they're likely not going to hit the 10 million target (which I guess is their new target).

Also, the DS has been the fastest selling, followed by the Wii. So I guess the PS3 is the fastest if you don't count the Wii and the DS.

This is the same company that said in the summer that the PS3 had outsold the XBox 360 and Wii in Europe since it launched ... I'm not saying they're lying, but I'd be very careful to believe what they say being how "playful" they've been with their numbers in the past.

It all depends on how you look at it. IMO he's trying to appease investors. It's interesting since Sony always brags about things even if they misinform people along the way. Nintendo on the other hand, i don't recall them ever saying such things in all of their gaming history, except for this year. Apparantly they really wanted to give Sony a kick in the butt.

they've done it for ages now

According to ioi data, yes. But you don't know what mediacreate has, or what "reality" was. Maybe they just shipping a lot (get a lot of orders). The PS3 must sell quite fast if the 60 GB is allready off the shelves (sold out).  Maybe is just talking about data from one retailer (GameStop?). What about the doubling in US?

I've heard plenty of spin from Sony over the last year or so but this is just blatant lies, 1st and 2nd best selling???

LOL yeah right I dont think so, In gamestation the guy in the shop said that they have had more PS3 returned to them this week for 2nd hand sale then they have sold new PS3. There is no way this is true in the UK.
