I actually can't remember the last time I had to explain the "shipped vs. sold" stuff or the, more irritating for me as I seemed to be alone myself in this one: "PS2 has NOT sold 140 million!"
I guess repeating things over and over gets into people's heads eventually... or maybe the site has matured

Although the latter may be due to the fact that the PS2 is probably close to 140 million now..... it was back in June 2008 when some Sony employee mistakenly said 140 instead of 130 million (and even then was referring to shipped)

NPD doesn't count the bundled Wii Sports.

Microsoft with only one system almost had as much revenue as Sony with three!

Anyways, awesome charts. I am surprised with all the doom and gloom 360 sales actually edged up a tad in 2009. And also that 360 sales have increased every year. I wonder if they can do it again in 2010? With Natal, maybe. The question is, will they be able to pack in Natal AND cut the hardware price both? If so then yes, sales will easily increase. If not, I dunno.

I disagree with the  pricing analysis though. I think Microsoft is much more able to cut pricing in 2010 than Sony. Sony hasn't been so much aggressive with "cost cutting" as the aricle says, as aggressive with losing money, one look at their gaming financials should have told the author that. Sony has been willing to lose tons of money in cutting the PS3 price, MS hasn't lately with 360 and have been content to reap profits, but are probably due for a cut.

Also, it shows how much PS3 and 360 (but not Wii) are direct competitors. 360 sales were up for the year, but declined in the last quarter? Why? Because Sony's price cuts (and increased PS3 sales) cost the 360 sales. That's direct competition. Consumers often shift between the PS3 and 360 based on relative price.

you gotta love these people who predict Sony are doomed/ sarcasm, will you all stop this please...
if Sony leaves you do realize you will be losing the only company that has ever pushed for technology changes, for example they introduced us all to DVD, and Blu-Ray, seriously without Sony the industry would become stagnant, is that what you all want??
Tell you what Nintendo may never have jumped to using DVD-based technology if it was not for Sony, and Microsoft would never have thought of even jumping on board either.

Even with a HUGE price cut....tons of advertising.... a console relaunch slim and game of the year exclusives.......sony only sold the same as xbox 360 in America.

Very shocking and disappointing for sony.

Sony isnt the leader of anything anymore.

They trail every single market they are in.

Even bluray sony only owns 30% of the format and HDDVD did the exact same thing for half the price.

With walkman and betamax sony was at the forefront....not anymore

It is their weakest region, you know. The fact that they retook the others regions and are outselling the 360 on an overall worldwide basis is good enough for now. Aggressive moves to gain the upperhand in the US will be decided this year.
