Forums - Sales - Has the damage from the 09 holiday season only been postponed?

In the run up to the 2008 holiday season, a large number of blockbuster titles were released for the HD consoles. Too much at the same time resulting in some big HD games being lost in the shuffle, while games like CoD5 dominated the market. EA suffered the most, as it had both Dead Space and Mirror's Edge see dissapointing sales in this season.

This year, fearing the same from Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed, many games have been delayed to early 2010. But has the damage only been postponed? There's not as much potential for sales releasing at that time, but a lot of games will be competing:

Mass Effect, Dante's Inferno and Bioshock 2 are all releasing within a couple of weeks of each other (Jan-Feb). EA could suffer the same problem with Dante's Inferno but in a slower season?

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I don't believe Dante's inferno is going to be affected much, but I do believe that it will sell poorly on the ps3, since God of war 3 releases a month later.

There are alot more games coming out in that time period, it feels like you are correct, the amount of quality ip releasing has actually increased since holiday 2009.

MAG will be affected negatively due to MWF2, and potentially Bioshock 2. HEAVY RAIN may affect Bioshock's sales on the ps3. FF XIII is obviously going to suck up a load of sales for most games so.. yes very competitive. White Knight chronicles and Star ocean release literally weeks in between each other on ps3.

Or Dante will sale great on Ps3 as the action genre fans buy it up to tide them over till the god arrives.

...... leo why do you think gamers are poor kids, i have got 6/7 games at once before. A trip to the bar will cost me as much as a new game.

Yup it's a big problem for developers, way too many games in a market that simply can't support them. These developers need to wake up and scale back or the market will do it for them, and it won't be nearly as nice about it.

geez, that's it?!?  learn to hold your liqour. xD

OT - dante's should do alright imo.  I'm defiently getting GoW but i'll probably pick up dante as well, i love the genre and they built a lot of goodwill with me from dead space so I want to give them a chance to impress me again.

Dante might be screwed. I know I'm waiting for GoW 3.

Anything Dante's Inferno suffers will be self-inflicted.
