Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Does Not Have "A Rich Online System Like Xbox Live" Says Yamauchi

You left off the rest of the quote.  The PSN doesn't have as many basic features as XBL to build upon, but it's in general a more open platform for developers, allowing them to get very creative with their online implementation.  Excellent examples of this are LittleBigPlanet and Demon's Souls.

Developers have a wider spectrum of possibilities with PSN versus Live, but you'll probably only see SCE funded developers making the most of them.  Meanwhile it's missing a few basic features (universal party system + cross game voice chat) that effects all titles equally.

I did? Sorry it wasn't in source article.

edit: NVM :)

It's in the article. SHMUP highlighted it with no problem. :P

This part is more interesting IMO. It only means that the PS3 is not an easy machine to program for, at least not developer-easy. We've seen what it can do with Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 though, once handled well...!

ooookkkk...

sooo...how'd you come up with that conclusion? coz when i break it down, i didn't ever get the idea or even a hit that it mentioned that the ps3 is hard to develop for...

lets break it down

"On the PS3, we don’t have a rich online system like an Xbox Live,

nope, no mention of  the ps3 being a hard machine to proggram for

and each title has to create its own online system features.

again nope, just mentions that developers need to create their own online features but doesn't mention it being hard to program for

But because we build from scratch,

maybe here? nope! build from scratch just means  that they start from nothing. nothing mentioned that the ps3 is a hard machine to program for

there are a lot of possibilities that are not in the other online games out there right now

or maybe here? still no. just says that because they can start from scratch the posibilities  that are not in the other online games out now are greater.

unless i'm missing something, please do point out where it says the "hard to program for" thing your claiming.

Hmmm? Why are you hitting me by the balls here?

I don't know if you have been following the gaming world news since the beginning of this generation, but I do recall developers saying that programming for the PS3 was not an easy job. I'm sure lots of people here can back me up with this, but I'm seriously not in the mood to look for many many articles about this subject. Even just going on Google is a pain in the ass! @_@

Now, about my statement... I only assumed it was about all this talk from before, and it only proved the point more? And besides, what he said wasn't bad at all. Like makingmusic said, look what some devs have accomplished with the different infrastructure compared to the 360's.

Also, how do we know if that's exactly what he said? It's the media after all. We can only speculate about the things we don't really know about. I mean, I'm not a developer (yet)!

I guess from both ends hes right, comparing my PSN experience to my Xbox Live experience. Xbox Live is worth it to me because it is a richer experience to me.

Does he do his interviews in English? If not there could be a translation difference in the connotation of the words. But basically what he said was that Live uses a single system, while Sony makes each game use their own system. I suppose that is accurate.

So a developer says, PSN does not have a rich tool set to draw from like Xbox Live, but we also don't have the limitations of the live infastructure which gives us an advantage if we choose to take it.

A consumer reads, Xbox live has a better online service than us.

I just find it interesting how people can spin a direct quote.

Here it is again folks, and please, don't just look at the words, read them.

“On the PS3, we don’t have a rich online system like an Xbox Live, and each title has to create its own online system features. But because we build from scratch, there are a lot of possibilities that are not in the other online games out there right now.”

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I honestly agree with him, although PSN does have services that I like more than Live. It's just, as of now, Live feels more complete/user friendly IMO.

He's just comparing the (known fact?) that Live is a fully-developed online PLATFORM where every game on the 360 runs its online part smoothly taking advantage of the tools that system provides as default for any game meant to have online for the 360, and the PS3 on the other hand presents a disadvantage in that respect (online) meaning they have to create their own online system from scratch as he's pointing out.

That's pretty much what I tried to say, lol, and I'm getting bashed for some reason?

I mean, needing to create something from scratch takes time... It must definitely come with trial and error, I mean it's just common sense and I'm sure it's not always easy!
