by that time it had became clear how inferior the console is technically and how little the 3rd party support will be. I do belong to this very crowd.

No, the power gap between the Wii and the PS360 was apparent to anyone with a brain as soon as all the specs were out. The exodus of the third parties was unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected - and even so, the Wii still enjoys superior third party support compared to ie. the Gamecube.
Noone will admit it but everyone knows it inside. It's like you would never admit that your favourite sports teams sucks balls. You're always gonna defend it, even if you long ago perceived it's false.
I support quite a few sports teams myself, and can honestly say that several of them suck balls.
Only fair-weather fans support their team as long as it's winning and resort to denial of reality when it's not - true fans support their team thru the good times and bad and can openly be honest about the positives and negatives of their favorites.
Every Nintendo fan who has been around since let's say the N64 knows it. The decline has been going on steady and slow, with every console decreasing in popularity.
Er, what?
Do you have a problem with basic mathematics or something? The Wii is the most successful Nintendo home console system since the NES. Hell, it will eventually surpass already has surpassed the NES.
To be honestly, I think the Wii without the gain in casuals would be around 12 millions right now.
For hardcore gamers, the Wii is a decline from and just like its predecessor was from its predecessor.
So if Wii hadn't sold to as many people as it did, it would have sold less units?
...
We're really getting into Zen level here, folks.
When people start taking stuff like DeBlob, Punchout or BoomBlox as defense against no-good-games-argument, it's a sign of desperation and moreover, resignation.
So it's desperation and resignation when people actually have the gall to enjoy different games than you, or value them on different metrics than you, Metacritic or Gamerankings?
Every Core-Nintendofan knows it - the Wii is a huger letdown than every predecessor it had - even the GC.
- Nintendo HAS abandoned the hardcore, some high-quality games like NSMBWii or SMG dont change the picture as a whole.
Oh yeah, I can only see black and white, myself. No shades of gray here, no sirree.
edit : I am aware that it's the right path for Nintendo itself, though. They only sold their soul in the process.
First off, Nintendo isn't a person or a living being, but a corporation. Thus, it cannot have a "soul" or sell one even if they exist.
Second, as was stated before, Nintendo was NEVER an enthusiast-centric company - it has always attempted to make games that everyone could enjoy, for very simple reason: money.
