Seriously guys the hate in here is rather pathetic to say the least. Square obviously looked to Sony for help funding FFXIII and got nothing from them to help them make the best game they could. The only avenue left to fund the game at that point was for either Microsoft to have part funded the game or for them to have made the decision themselves that the extra revenue by going multiplatform would minimize the risk.

Stop being hypocritical with your criticism, Sony first and foremost are to blame for this supposed debacle that has happened, NOBODY else. I guess this point conveniently slipped your mind when you all saw the opportunity to jump on the hate 360 and SE wagon today.

i didn't buy tekken 6, hell Arcade version looks better, and it arcade its pratically a PS3. >_> how they screwed it beyond me

I just wish people would only buy exclusives. Supporting muliplatform games is so bad for gaming. It makes me sad seeing great devs like IW, Criterion, and Rockstar's talents go to waste making these underwhelming pee ons of the gaming industry. Whether its on PS3, Wii, 360, or PC these devs just need to stick to making a great game on one platform instead of a C game on multiple.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I admit I'm not a business major so I try to think things in ways I can understand

Way I see the idea of boycotts is this.

I am a small company with a budget of $1mil I'm making a multi game

I split my budget 50/50 for each console

when the dust settles I get 1mil return from 360 owners but only 500k from ps3 folks primarily because the ps3 port was sub par and that only happened because we found it difficult working on the ps3, as a result the ps3 took much more time and effort than I was willing to put in. All this ends up in some people choosing to boycott the product entirely.

Maybe it's just me but when it's time for a sequel, I'm gonna think long and hard about the boycotters, the amount of time, effort and money I had to put into the ps3 version and the sub par result which not only didn't get me much in return but made all my effort effectively worthless.

Fortunately I am.

What you say has a degree of truth but it is not applicable in this situation, and it wouldn't be applicable in most situations. Only very rarely would a situation arise in which boycotters would be shunned and ignored(assuming they are big enough to have an effect on sales), because like everyone else they are consumers and there is money to be made from them.  A situation where it would be applicable is where the boycott was company specific and the reason for the boycott would be unchangable or to change it would take away other revenue greater than what the change would bring. Say for instance PS3 owners are upset at Sega(could be anyone) for making 360 games and decide to boycott Sega until they stop making 360 games. Well if Sega is making more money on 360 games than they are on PS3 games then they would not make the change and would just simply stop making PS3 games because it is not profitable to make them with the boycott intact and there isn't much they can do about it.

In this situation the boycott would not be company specific, it's practice specific towards a whole industry. For your argument sake we will assume that the boycott effects the PS3 profitability, where as before hand a PS3 port was profitable but now because of the boycott it is not. Well if there are 10 companies making cheap PS3 ports and they all are making sales of $500,000 on average, but because of this boycott each company decides to stop making the cheap ports. Well that is $5 million dollars annually that gamers are no longer spending on cheap ports and would be dying to spend them on quality ports(seeing as quality was their reason for boycotting). A smart company would see that and realize that if they invest the extra money to make a quality port they would then be the only company grabbing from that pot of $5 million from those consumers. As a result of this, the company would make a lot of money because the demand for quality ports would be there. This would then make other companies follow suit to get their portion of the $5 million. And like with any industry there will be winners and losers and the winners will be those that make the best quality ports(as that is the purchasing criteria from the boycotters).

Ofcourse none of this would ever happen in real life as the quality of a port is subjective and the information to the consumer is not readily available to even make an educated decision. I am simply using the assumption of perfect information to illustrate the theory behind this. Also you'd have to assume that all companies are aware of this and thus they would not collectively pull out of the market because of the boycott they would simply make better ports.

Couldn't it be argued that the extra money used to improve ps3 versions which doesn't automatically guarantee better return can be added to further a 360 exclusive which is more likely to do better anyway whether or not you choose to add that extra spit and polish or saved for a rainy day? (I'm thinking about Valve here and SE with regards to Last Remnant as things stand)

But yes I agree that the ps3 market is not small enough to be completely ignored as a result most companies will be willing to do better and improve their product.

Well if a boycott is about lack of quality then increasing the quality on a PS3 game would Guarantee a better return or else that would not be the reason for a boycott. The boycott would simply be because PS3 owners don't want to buy games period. But that is besides the point. Assuming it doesn't guarantee as you say, yes you could argue your argument but only as a single firm. But again the market and a firm act in two different ways. If there was more money to be made in the 360 market then you would assume that other companies would move into making games for that audiance. If there is money to be made on high quality ports to the PS3 then other companies would move into that as well. If there is potential to make money, companies will be created to fill those markets.

Like it or lump it, but getting to market first, and getting the market share it did, the 360 locked most games into DVD level of content or less. Sony titles such as Uncharted 2 will use the BR of course, but most multiplatform games - with the probable exception of RPGs, will stick to one DVD of content.

If that means less textures, more compressed textures or whatever that's what you're going to get.

Simple market economics and realities. Sony will of course push titles with more content, such as Uncharted 2, and where the game needs multiple disks, such as Rage or FFXIII, then one BR disk will be used more effectively.

Just the way it goes.

You're joking right? Please tell me you, after hearing what I've said.....you honestly think I'm going to pay even more extra money for a game that already had it in it.

I've bought many games off of PSN that didn't sell well. Critter Crunch, Noby Noby Boy, Piyotoma, Everyday Shooter, Cuboid. So yes I buy PSN content.

I never said that you would buy DLC, I said people will buy it regardless if SE did take it out just to make extra money.

Because if it was a PS3 exclusive, Square wouldn't have to think about how the game run on 360.

The fact that FFXIII runs just as smoothly on PS3 as 360 proves the PS3 version had to become inferior to make it equal.

This is not the treatment that people who waited 5 years for a maxed out exclusive Final Fantasy debut of this gen should have gotten. I'm almost temped to say that Microsoft can have the now prostituted Final Fantasy franchise.

Square has a one chance to truly make amends for what they have done.

Here are the scenarios:

Runs worse on the Xbox 360: People wouldn't have been surprised.

Runs the same on both: Well people can live with that.

Runs better on the Xbox 360: Epic meltdowns, remember how the internet crashed with the announcement?

I would suggest that its more likely the Xbox 360 version was toned down than the PS3 version was toned down from a runtime/gameplay perspective because the negative consequences for the former are not so great as the latter.

Oh really? If they are limited to 6.8GB they would use all space available. As of yet theres no real space pressure. Sony has given a mandate to pimp Blu Ray to its exclusive developers, so of course they are going to throw everything they can into the disc to make it bigger.

Slowmo....

Since when has Sony ever been a 3rd party developers bank? It is not up to Sony to fund a 3rd party game.

What's your point?  Not all games are going to fill a DVD, heck there are games that would barely fill up a CD.  My point is that the 360 established the DVD as the standard in line with PC, vs Sony's attempt to push the notion of BR and games needing more space.  This is a fact.  I'm not saying that games are being held back, simply that with DVD as a standard developers will use that as the baseline, with only occasional games going over 1 DVD and most of those will be Sony exclusives pushing the notion of more content.  Games have always ben developed (and material has been cut) to fit to the prevelant storage medium.  On PC a lot of games did go beyond DVD, but due to the fact you always install they could unpack themselves accordingly.

Calm yourself.

I personally doubt many games will go over DVD for a while, the cost is too high.  However, if we do want better textures, larger worlds, etc. then the DVD barrier will need to be broken.  Right now though that's titles like Rage (when it releases) or Uncharted 2, which will only represent a minority of titles for a while yet I think.
