Your created character carries over from the single player campaign. You cant make a character for online only, if you want to make a new character you have to start a new game.

i see what you mean, i prefer open world, but sometimes its not needed like in god of war...but then again, too linear can become a problem, thats one of the things i dont like about Devil may cry
