Forums - Gaming Discussion - Top 10 Ways to Fix JRPGs

So, IGN wants to improve JRPGs by taking away what makes them JRPG... interesting.

If you don't like the genre, play something else, period. Don't try to make it into what you like.
And if we are talking of plagiarism and lack of innovation, westerns are far more guilty.

My take on how to fix JRPG's

1: Stop messing with the time honored tradition of Fight, Magic, Item, Defend, Use, Run
2: I want to control a squad, not 1 and only 1 person during a battle then go to another screen to optimize how my other characters react.
3: More ATB style turn based games. It does not have to be fully turn based, but I want to take time to use strategy. That was more then half the game in most JRPG's back in the day.
4: Give me more then 3 extra characters to choose from for the whole game. Let me decide how to best work my party.
5: No more damned Teenage or younger kids saving the world.
6: Bring back world maps and oodles and oodles of secrets. Include some secrets that are not in the PRIMA GUIDE!!!. Make finding secret something special again, and not just something that anyone who has 10 bux can do. Even better, stop allowing PRIMA to produce walk throughs.
7: Keep save points, but have them be more frequent, approx. 1 hour of game play apart. Keep the really really hard secrets with fewer save points.
8: Full Japanese voice acting with subtitles for all games.
9: Add more 10-20minutes CG spectacles at major turning points in the story line.
10: MAKE MORE AND SELL MORE JRPG's IN THE US!!!!!! !! !! and for good measure a few more exclamation points !!!!!!.

This is coming from a gamer who thinks that Super Nintendo was the absolute golden age of JRPG's and no one will convince me otherwise.

And this, absolutely

That would be awful.

So IGN basically wants all JRPGs to be Oblivion.....if that happens I will stop playing JRPGs

Considering we are writing at forums... obviously. I mean, I am taking your question seriously. Guess what I think of you now? Anyway, why would someone want to listen to some weird language that you don't understand? I don't get that.

If you want character development you may want to give Planescape Torment or The Witcher a go. Unlike other Western RPGs where you build a character from scratch and you give him your own motivations, the main characters in those 2 have deep rooted motivations with deep and involving storylines. The other thing is that the story is more original than in most RPGs (both J and W variety).

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows machine. I only game on consoles. I got out of PC gaming in 2002 when I finally had enough of buying a game for $50 and then waiting 6 months for patches. (No offense to PC gamers, it just wasn't for me.)

Mis-matched lip syncing drives me insane. Also, some of the localization acting and writing is so bloody bad that I'd rather listen to a language I do not understand.

Fix the acting problem (which is a problem with gaming itself, not just JRPGs) and I'd be more willing to listen to the English translation.

So you like the japanese voice actors more than english? Why? How do you know if the writing is better if you don't understand it?
